Emma Lou Burt is retiring as office aide at Gaylesville School after 28 years of service and Ann Beddingfield is retiring as librarian at Centre Elementary School after 35 and a half years of service. Their retirements become effective Dec. 1.
The board also accepted the resignation of Ryan Mulkey as a special education paraprofessional at Cherokee County High School, effective Oct. 31.
In other personnel action, the board:
-Approved the support placement of Vickie Mason as a vocational bus driver for the Gaylesville route.
-Approved the support transfer by agreement of Enrique Monge as a bus driver from the Cedar Bluff Route (Bus 10-40) to the Centre Route (Bus 09-28) effective Dec. 1, 2011.
-Approved postings for a special education paraprofessional at Cherokee County High School, a vocational bus driver at Gaylesville School (retroactive to Oct. 4, 2011) and a bus driver for the Cedar Bluff Route.
Dr. Ann Dykes, CNP director for Cherokee County Schools, updated the board on Advance Education Standard VI-Stakeholder Communication and Relationship as part of the board’s ongoing process to seek district accreditation standards.
Dr. Dykes defined stakeholder as anyone who has an interest in education. According to her group’s impact statement success comes from the understanding and support of stakeholders and opportunities for collaboration and sharing leadership skills among stakeholders to help students learn and advance.
The group’s first meeting, Dr. Dykes said, was in February and the last meeting was in May. They sought input from Superintendent Brian Johnson and other supervisors in the Cherokee County School System and also seek input from members of the Cherokee County Board of Education.
According to Dr. Dykes, they are concentrating on five indicators at this time.
“A lot of our team members thought we were highly functional in these areas but I am of the opinion that we can always do a little better,” said Dr. Dykes.
Johnson pointed out that these accreditation committees are composed of both certified and support personnel.
“I want to thank Dr. Dykes, along with other supervisors,” said Johnson. “This does take a substantial amount of time. But we as a system believe this will take us to the next level.”
The board approved the financial report as presented and also approved a resolution for renewal of a line of credit with Regions Bank.
“The state department is asking each system during these uncertain times to have this in case proration were to hit and we didn’t have the money to make payroll,” explained Johnson.
In other business, the board:
-Approved a contract for an office aide at Gaylesville School.
-Approved governmental entities requests
Upon Johnson’s recommendation the board approved re-scheduling the next board meeting, set for Tuesday, Nov. 1, to Tuesday, Nov. 8. The meeting after that is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 29 and this will eliminate a big time span between meetings in case something comes up, Johnson said.
