Cedar Bluff boys, girls capture fifth straight Cherokee County Track Meet

Every year, the Cedar Bluff Tigers use the Cherokee County Track and Field meet as a springboard to the rest of their season.

The two-time defending Class 1A state champions had won the previous four county meets on their way to the state tournament. After claiming their fifth consecutive county crown on Wednesday in Centre, the Tigers are hoping more championship hardware is on the way.

The Cedar Bluff Lady Tigers once again took top county honors with a total of 124 points. Cherokee County was second with 63 points, followed by Sand Rock (43 points) and Gaylesville (5 points).

The Cedar Bluff boys tallied 121 total points to lock down first place. Cherokee County finished second with 108 points, followed by Sand Rock (32 points) and Gaylesville (10 points).

Seven Lady Tigers won individual meet events. Jessica Brannon and Audrey Hargitt placed first in two different categories. Brannon won the pole vault (7’6”) and the 800-meter run (2:53.91). Hargitt placed first in the long jump (13’2”) and the triple jump (28’8 ½”). Mariah Brown won the javelin (77’8”).

Deanna Hanks claimed the discus throw (90’5”). Tanessa Fife took first in the shotput (33’2”). Katy Hall won the 100-meter hurdles (18.60).

As a team, the Lady Tigers won all three relays. They earned the 3200-meter with a time of 11:57.40. They also won the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:57 and the 400-meter with a time of 1:04.2.

“We are proud of the tradition we have in track, and I’m proud of these girls,” Cedar Bluff girls track coach Joe Carpenter said. “We have sectionals coming up in two weeks, so we are looking forward to that.”

The Cedar Bluff boys won four running events. Evan McBurnett claimed the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:17. Idral Bowen won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.40. Tony McGinnis took the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:48.

The Tigers also won the 3200-meter relay with a time of 9:14.47.

“It really came down to the last couple of races and a good effort by the whole team,” Cedar Bluff boys track coach Mark Mitchell said. “This is the kind of team parents would be proud of.”

Rashanda Collier and Brittany Suits led the Cherokee County Lady Warriors to their runner-up finish to Cedar Bluff. Collier claimed the 100-meter dash (14.09) and the 200-meter dash (30.25). Suits earned the top spot in the 1600-meter run (no official time given) and the 3200-meter run (14:16).

Jaly Hincy won the 400-meter dash for the Lady Warriors with a time of 1:11.00.

The third-place Sand Rock Wildcats had two first-place winners in Jennifer Campbell and Anna Rico. Campbell won the high jump (4’8”) and Rico claimed the 300-meter hurdles (57.81).

Boys runner-up Cherokee County claimed 11 events, led by D.J. Fife and Gabriel Chambers. Fife won the long jump (19’1 ½”) and the 200-meter dash (22.86). Chambers finished first in the high jump (5’8”) and the 100-meter dash (11.18).

Moryet Chambers won the triple jump (36’3”). Josh Day claimed the pole vault (11’6”). JaMichael Andrews took the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles (16.03). Tyler Stubbs won the 400-meter dash (53.05) and Colin Perry won the 300-meter hurdles (42.44).

As a team, the Warriors also claimed the 400-meter relay (44.31) and the 1600-meter relay (3:44).

Sand Rock’s boys had three first-place showings, two of which came from Wesley Pruitt. Pruitt claimed the shotput (41’2 ½”) and the discus (105’10”). R.J. Thornberry won the javelin with a throw of 121’5”.
