The Centre City Council, during its Tuesday, Dec. 11 meeting, approved demolishing two structures in the city limits deemed unsafe by the city’s lien and clean ordinance.

Following a public hearing in which the council received no comments, the council approved demolishing and removing the structure at 300 Bay Springs Road and 590 West Main Street.

The demolition fee for the Bay Springs Road site is $2,200 and the demolition fee for the West Main Street site is $4,500.

City Clerk Mary Lee Tucker stated that property owners had been notified and that all procedures had been followed.

Upon the recommendation of Centre Fire Chief Kevin Ware, the council approved purchase of new radios for the fire department for a total of $7,488.

This equipment will upgrade what firefighters have at the present time.

“We have budgeted $7,000 for new radios for the fire department,” said Centre Mayor Tony Wilkie.

“Kevin got us a quote where we could buy some of the radios and get one free.

“The total amount was $7,488.

“That was actually $488 over what we had budgeted.

“But when firefighters’ lives are at stake, you can’t put a price on someone’s life.”

The council approved the purchase.

The council also approved an agreement to pay $2,500 annually in an agreement with the district attorney’s office, law enforcement agencies and other municipalities for forensic services as discussed in a previous meeting.

“We had an unfortunate incident in our city recently having to do with forensics,” said Wilkie. “This is something we need to be a part of.”

In other business, the council approved waiving the second meeting in December because of the Christmas holidays.
