BIRMINGHAM – A pair of Birmingham-area players swept the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Mr. Baseball and Miss Softball awards during Sunday’s annual awards banquet.

Spain Park’s Mikey White was named Mr. Baseball while Mortimer Jordan’s Haylie McCleney earned Miss Softball.

“I was hoping that I would have a good senior year,” White said. “I would never have imagined winning these kinds of awards in the same year. It’s incredible.”

“It’s nice to know all the hard work and hours you put in the weight room and at practice every day paid off,” McCleney said. “I’m blessed that I get to go out there and play a sport I love every day.”

Cherokee County junior pitcher Tori Davis, who was voted Class 4A Softball Player of the Year, also received a spot on the ASWA’s Super All-State Softball Team. The team was announced on Sunday along with the Mr. Baseball and Miss Softball selections.

Davis led the Lady Warriors (39-6) to their second straight Class 4A state runner-up this season. She compiled a 39-3 record in 255 innings with 275 strikeouts and a 0.60 ERA.

Davis also batted .496 with 17 doubles, five home runs, a pair of triples, 14 walks, 38 runs and 42 RBIs.

Also earning the Gatorade state Player of the Year award, White is the Birmingham area’s first Mr. Baseball, an award that was started in 1999, and he heads the ASWA Super All-State team.

He helped the Jaguars advance to the semifinal round of Class 6A playoffs before losing the final game of a best-of-three series to eventual champion Oxford. The shortstop/pitcher batted.388 with nine home runs, 14 doubles and 19 stolen bases this season.

Center fielder McCleney is also the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year and leads the Super All-State team. She was part of three Class 5A state championships during her five seasons and Mortimer Jordan advanced to the championship all five years.

McCleney’s name dots the state record book several times, including this season’s .692 batting average. She swiped 65 bases in 66 attempts this season, contributed 90 hits, scored 64 runs, belted nine homers and struck out only once – another state record – in 130 at-bats.
