Cherokee County’s 13 volunteer fire departments were recent recipients of $1,719.94 in grant funds presented by Alabama Governor Bob Riley. Senator Steve Means delivered the checks and presented them during the July meeting of the Cherokee County Association of Volunteer Firefighters held in the Cherokee County Administration Building.

Cherokee County’s fire departments include Broomtown, Centre, Cedar Bluff, Cloudland, Ellisville, Gaylesville, Leesburg, McCord’s Crossroads, Mt. Weisner, Sand Rock, Spring Creek, Spring Garden and Tucker’s Chapel.

“When I ran for office 11 years ago, the biggest surprise I had was how many volunteer fire departments we have and what you do,” said Means. “You do it for the satisfaction of doing the job and you are to be commended. I was really shocked. I know your people out there appreciate it.”

Means then read a letter from Gov. Riley.

“I would like to say a special thanks to you, the members of this department, for your selfless dedication in serving your community,” said Riley in the letters addressed to each fire department. “On behalf of the state of Alabama, I am please to provide this funding toward your valuable efforts and hard work.”
