CENTRE---Cherokee County has approximately 15,000 registered voters. The turnout for the 2012 general election was 9,897, which equaled 66% of registered voters participating. The high vote totals resulted in Republicans taking all but one race for county offices.
With 25 boxes of 26 reporting (all but the provisional ballots), Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney led Democrat Barack Obama 7,494 to 2,126, or 76.67% to 21.75%
In the race for the Ninth Judicial Circuit's place two circuit judge position,incumbent David Rains received 4,410 votes;Fort Payne attorney Shaunathan Bell,5,079.Bell won with 53.48% to Rains' 46.44%.
Bell also won in Dekalb County. With 52 of 54 precincts counted,Bell was ahead 12,529 to 10,067 for Rains. Bell's total in both counties was 17,608 and Rains' total was 14,477. The total percentage was Bell with 54.9 percent and Rains with 45.1 percent.
The Cherokee County probate judge/county commission chair race had Republican Kirk Day earning 5,134 (52.93%) votes to Democrat Sid Garrett's 4,561 (47.03%). Garrett is the manager of the Cherokee County Water Authority and active in the Centre First United Methodist
Church. Day was appointed by former Governor Bob Riley in 2004 to fill the vacated position until the 2006 election. Day lost the 2006 election to Melvyn Salte, who was prevented from running for re-election in 2012 because state law states that judges cannot run for office past age 70, Salter's current age.
In the race for supertintendent of Cherokee County Schools, Mitchell Guice earned 5,663 (59.07%) votes; Brett Keasler, 3,857 (40.23%). Guice has served as director of the Cherokee County Career and Technology Center. Keasler has served as an assistant principal and teacher at Gaylesville School.
District One, Cherokee County Commission, had incumbent Democrat Wade Sprouse receiving 4,489(47.40%)votes; Republican Randy Jones,the winner with 4.978 (52.56%). Sprouse is employed at the Cherokee Electric Cooperative and is a farmer. Jones is an insurance agent and farmer.
The County Commission district three race brought 4,470 votes for Democrat Lanny Starr and 5,063 for the winner, Republican Marcie Foster. Starr is the owner of Lanny's restaurant in Centre and serves on numerous civic boards and committees. Foster is an attorney in Leesburg. The current district three commissioner Elbert St. Clair has served two terms but did not run for re-election.
In the Cherokee County Board of Education race for place three, Democrat Suzanne Bishop received 4,712 (50.53%)votes to Republican Linda Archer's 4,601 (49.34%). Bishop is the lone Democrat winning an opposed race in Cherokee County.
In the Board of Education place four race, Republican Mark Green earned 6,315(65.90%) votes; Democrat and incumbent Dewandee Neyman,
3,260(34.02%). Both are retired educators in the county school system.
District Three Congressman Republican Mike Rogers, who represents the majority of Cherokee County, won handily over his opponent John Harris - 77% to 22%. Fourth District Congressman Republican Robert Adderholt won 77% to Democrat Daniel Boman's 23%.
Probate Judge Melvyn Salter announced that provisional ballots results will be announced next Tuesday, Nov. 13. Only a small number of provisional ballots were reported by the returning officers at the various polling sites.
