Centre, Ala. –Cherokee Regional Medical Center is participating as public weigh-in sites for the annual Scale Back Alabama program.

Now in its seventh year, Scale Back Alabama is a statewide weight-loss contest. The purpose of the 10-week contest is to help our state fight its challenge with obesity by encouraging Alabamians to lose weight, to exercise and to have fun while doing it.

There is no charge for participating in the program.

To participate, individuals must go to a local weigh-in site during the week of Jan. 19 – 25 to register and have their initial weigh-in. Then, throughout the contest they will receive weekly health tips and other resources to help them in their efforts to improve their diet and get more exercise.

“We are very excited to be able to continue to offer this program in our community,” said Patrick Trammel, CEO, Cherokee Medical Center. “We know that Alabama faces a tremendous challenge with regard to obesity and that the extra weight leads to all types of health problems. We’re happy to do our part in helping Alabamians get started on a good path for the new year, one that will hopefully change their lives.”

Grand prizes will be awarded from a drawing of individuals who participate on a team in which all members lose at least 10 pounds. The first-place team will win $1,000 per team member; the second-place team will win $500 per team member; and the third-place team members will win $250 per team member. For those individuals who lose at least 10 pounds, but were on a team that did not all reach the goal, there is a separate prize drawing for 50 individual prizes of $100 each.

Scale Back Alabama is a public awareness campaign hosted by Alabama’s hospitals and the Alabama Department of Public Health, with generous support from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. For more information, go to www.scalebackalabama.com.

Cherokee Regional’s weigh-in will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 in the hospital lobby.
