During the planning session of the Nov. 9 meeting of the Cherokee County Commission, Sid Garrett with the Cherokee County Water Authority gave a report to the commission. According to Garrett, there were “no violations to the regulatory process…and happy to say that we’ve got a great source of water and hope that continues on down the line”.

One project of the water authority, Garrett said, is changing out all water meters with newer ones. This upgrade will make the water authority more efficient with the reading of meters and resulting in fewer mistakes.

According to Garrett, “we are about 60 percent completed in our change out and hopefully we’re going to be through around Thanksgiving”. Garrett thanked the great leadership of the water board in this and other projects.

Another project is the partnership with the Cherokee County Board of Education with the installation of sewer lines from Sand Rock School to the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Leesburg.

This is being handled by the Board of Education and when it is completed, it will be in ownership by the Cherokee County Water Authority. Garrett said there have been several inquiries about tying on to this system in the Sand Rock area.

Sonny Brasfield, Director of the Alabama County Commission Association and Henry Van Arcken, the insurance director with the ACCA met with the commissioners requesting their consideration of liability insurance through their program.

During the regular session, Mark Richards with the Northeast Water Authority addressed the commission to thank the county for the cooperative efforts in various projects with the county in particular the Cowen Creek bridge project.

The commission approved a resolution to execute a contract with Bancorpsouth Equipment Finance for the purchase of a new GradeAll and a 2010 Freightliner pothole truck for the county.

The commission tabled consideration on the Fuelman Advantage Card for county vehicles.

In other business, the announcement of the Park Board appointment will be made at the November 23 meeting. Persons interested in being considered for this appointment have until November 17 to apply.

Excess land redemption in the amount of $304.60 to Tony Chandler was approved.

Commissioner Carlton “Bubba” Teague expressed appreciation to all veterans for the freedoms we enjoy including the freedom for public meetings.

A silent prayer was observed in memory and in honor of all veterans.
