Five area baseball, softball teams ranked in latest ASWA poll

There were a few changes for area teams ranked in the latest Alabama Sportswriters Association baseball and softball poll, released on Thursday.

The biggest movements came in baseball, particularly the Class 1A rankings. Spring Garden (7-3) jumped up a spot to No. 5 this week. The Panthers host a doubleheader at Coosa Christian on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.

Cedar Bluff (4-4) dropped six spots from last week to No. 10. The Tigers play a doubleheader at Gaylesville on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

In Class 2A, Sand Rock (5-4) moved up to No. 6 in this week’s poll. The Wildcats play a doubleheader at Gaston on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.

In Class 3A, the Piedmont Bulldogs (5-3) maintained their No. 4 ranking from last week. Piedmont is scheduled to play at Glencoe on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Only one area team continues to be ranked in the softball poll, and that’s Class 4A Cherokee County (2-1). The Lady Warriors dropped a notch to No. 4 in this week’s rankings. They’re scheduled to host Alexandria on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Three other area teams received consideration for this week’s softball rankings: Class 2A Sand Rock (4-1), Class 1A Collinsville (6-1) and Class 1A Spring Garden (2-1).

Sand Rock is set to host West End on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Collinsville hosts Jacksonville Christian on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Spring Garden, which dropped from being ranked No. 10 last week, plays at Coosa Christian on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
