Girls Sub-Regional Roundup: Cedar Bluff makes history with win over Appalachian

ONEONTA – They took the hard route to Jacksonville, but the Cedar Bluff Lady Tigers captured a 59-30 basketball victory at Appalachian in Class 1A Sub-Regional girls action Thursday, punching their ticket to the Northeast Regional Tournament for the first time.

The Lady Tigers (15-15) will take on Skyline (21-8) in the regional semifinals on Monday at 6 p.m. Skyline defeated Jacksonville Christian 73-32 in other sub-regional action on Thursday.

Against Appalachian (14-10), Audrianna Hargitt led the Lady Tigers with 17 points. Delilah Price tossed in 14 points. Hannah Leach added 10 points and Jasmine Adams finished with eight points.

Cedar Bluff jumped out of the gate quickly, taking a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers increased their lead to 38-17 at halftime and held a 51-26 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Class 1A

Spring Garden 71, Parkway Christian 18

SPRING GARDEN – Emory Reedy led three Spring Garden players in double figures, helping the Lady Panthers throttle Parkway Christian 71-18 in Class 1A Girls Sub-Regional action on Thursday.

Reedy finished with 17 points for Spring Garden (18-12), which advances to the Northeast Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State University for the 11th time. The Lady Panthers will face No. 7 Ragland (23-7) on Monday at 3 p.m.

Ragland defeated Woodville 49-47 in other sub-regional action on Thursday.

Tori Pierce contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. Madison Sides connected on a pair of 3-pointers and tallied 10 points. She also had seven steals.

Darian Gaines had eight points. Tykeah Leek contributed nine rebounds and five steals. Auburn Kirk finished with seven points.

Victoria Cosby led Parkway Christian (8-15) with five points.

Spring Garden led throughout the contest. The Lady Panthers held a 23-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter and took a 42-16 lead at halftime. Spring Garden went on a 14-0 run in the third to take a 56-16 lead heading into the final quarter.

Class 2A

Sand Rock 64, Section 43

SAND ROCK – Courtney Rowe posted 15 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four blocked shots and a steal to lead the Class 2A, No. 9 Sand Rock Lady Wildcats to a 64-43 basketball sub-regional victory on Thursday.

Rowe was one of four Lady Wildcats (21-8) to score in double figures. Leslie Mackey added 13 points, five boards and an assist. Madison McCullough contributed 12 points, 13 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Madison Smith came away with 12 points, 12 boards, two blocked shots, an assist and a steal. Emily Langley finished with eight points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

With the win, the Lady Wildcats advance to the Northeast Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum. Sand Rock will take on Lanett (17-10) on Monday at noon. Lanett defeated Ranburne 75-56 in other sub-regional action on Thursday.

Class 3A

Piedmont 65, Glencoe 49

PIEDMONT – The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs clinched their first Northeast Regional Basketball Tournament appearance since 2008 with a 65-49 victory over Glencoe in the Class 3A Sub-Regionals on Thursday.

Piedmont (26-6) advances to face the winner of Friday’s sub-regional game between Geraldine and Holly Pond in the Northeast Regional semifinals on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Against Glencoe (18-11), Piedmont was led by Sarah Garner's game-high 29 points. Garner also posted four rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

BreAnna Thompson tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds. Bre Green added eight points and Brittany Holloway finished with seven points.

Laura Poovey led Glencoe with 27 points. Hope Gaskin finished with 10 points.

Piedmont led by only a three-point margin at halftime, 23-20, but went on a 42-29 run in the second half for the final.
