SPRING GARDEN – If there’s one thing Spring Garden football coach Jason Howard has a luxury of this season, it’s running backs.

On Friday night against Appalachian, junior tailback Trey Littlefield rushed for 163 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Panthers past Appalachian 21-6.

Littlefield also had a solid night defensively, as he returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. He also had two tackles for losses, rushed two passes and finished with four total tackles.

“He played real solid tonight,” Howard said. “We have a nice rotation of running backs, and they all had a pretty good game. A lot of that goes to our offensive line. I was proud of them.”

Jake Scott rushed for 77 yards on 14 carries. Tyler Messer added 72 yards on 12 carries.

Spring Garden (1-0) held a 7-0 lead at the half. Appalachian (0-1) scored a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to make it 7-6. The Eagles went for the two-point conversion, but the attempt was stopped for a loss by the Panthers’ Tyler Smart.

Littlefield tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Spring Garden put the game away.
