Otters qualify 16 for state swim meet

ANNISTON – The Centre Otter swim team will send 16 swimmers to the state swim meet in Opelika on July 27-28.

The Otters managed a third-place finish at the district meet in Anniston on Friday against much bigger squads from Oneonta, Jacksonville and Anniston.

Bailey Graves led the boys individual points with 51. Reece Winstead (49), Dru Rainer (48), Reid Davis and Hayes Winstead (46) were close behind Graves.

Leighton Rainer was the girls top individual scorer with 53 points. Madeline Winstead and Erin McCord each posted 52 points. Carly Duryea had 51 points.

District individual gold medals were awarded to Leighton Rainer (9-10 50-breast), Erin McCord (11-12 50-breast), Nathan Whitt (9-10 50-back), Carly Duryea (15-18 100-individual medley) and Madeline Winstead (13-14 50-back).

The 11-12 year old relay team of Reid Davis, Dru Rainer, Bailey Graves and Nicolas Sawyer also captured relay wins in the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay.

Silver medals were earned by Graves (50-breast, 50-free, 100-free), Dru Rainer (50-back), Leighton Rainer (100-individual medley), Mark Sawyer (8-and-under 25-breast), Nathan Whitt (9-10 50-free) and Reece Winstead (8-and-under 25-fly).

Alexis Smith, Ainsley Davis, Leighton Rainer and Savannah Moore scored silver in the 9-10 200-medley relay.

Seven-year-old Virginia Rainer totaled 45.5 individual points with a third and two fourth place finishes in the 8-and-under grouping. Other swimmers picking up key points for the Otters were Alex McCord (29), Kendal Duryea (29) and Camryn Peace (20). Otter newcomer Sydney Stanley earned nine points in her swimming debut.
