Outstanding games are becoming the norm for Sand Rock quarterback Drew Norris and Collinsville guard Ryan Chamblee in the 2009 high school football season.

Norris, a sophomore, completed 11 of 20 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns to lead Sand Rock to a 42-7 thrashing of Class 1A, No. 2 Gaston on homecoming last Friday. Norris’ effort helped improve the Wildcats’ record to 4-1.

Meanwhile, Chamblee, a junior, recorded 13 pancake blocks and nine bulldozers (block from beginning of the play until the end) in Collinsville’s 50-18 victory over Fayetteville. Chamblee has graded out at 95 percent or better in every game this season for the Panthers (2-3).

In other statewide happenings, Fairhope running back Jamal Woodyard amassed 465 all-purpose yards – 314 yards rushing on 19 carries, 121 receiving on three catches and 30 yards on two kickoff returns – and three touchdowns in a 41-21 win over Class 4A, No. 3 UMS-Wright.

The effort earned him Alabama Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week honors.

Woodyard scored on touchdown runs of 66 and 77 yards and caught a 96-yard touchdown pass on a screen pass. He now has more than 1,000 rushing yards this season.

The two finalists were Michael Lindsey of Elba and Mike Smith of Tallassee. Lindsey accounted for four touchdowns, two receiving, one rushing and one kick return, and 276 all-purpose yards in the Tigers' 40-18 win over Geneva. Lindsey had four kick returns for 153 yards, highlighted by an 85-yard kick return for a touchdown, earned 101 yards off three receptions with TD passes of 73 and 13 yards, and rushed for 22 yards with a 15-yard TD run.

On defense, Taylor West of Abbeville earned player of the week honors over Tyler Owens of Clay-Chalkville and Winfred Caldwell of Opelika.

With the game tied at 14 in the final minute, West returned a block of a potential-game losing field goal 97 yards to give the Generals a 22-14 win. He finished the game with eight tackles and had a pass break-up on defense, while rushing for 78 yards on offense.

Owens had five solo tackles, seven assists, three tackles for loss and blocked a field goal attempt at the end of regulation against Tuscaloosa County. The Cougars wound up winning the game in overtime to stay unbeaten. Caldwell deflected a pass on fourth down inside the 20 to end one Vigor drive, then intercepted a pass and returned it for 82 yards on the next drive to seal a 26-6 win over undefeated Vigor, the No. 1 team in 5A. He also had six tackles.

The players of the week were chosen by a panel of ASWA voters from 65 nominations submitted by members in Albertville, Birmingham, Centre, Demopolis, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Graysville, Hartselle, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta, and Opelika.
