Sand Rock claims Gaston volleyball tournament

Madison Smith posted 45 kills, 36 digs, eight aces and seven blocks to lead the Sand Rock Lady Wildcats to a perfect 5-0 day Saturday at the Gaston Spike Out Tournament.

Sand Rock (5-0) claimed wins over Oneonta (25-12, 25-23), Gaston (25-16, 25-13) and Hokes Bluff (26-28, 25-17, 16-14) in round robin play. The Lady Wildcats defeated Oneonta (25-13, 25-12) in the semifinals, then beat Gaston for the title 21-25, 25-11 and 15-4.

Kelsey Hayes added 35 digs, 24 kills and 11 aces. Courtney Rowe had 20 kills and 20 digs. Ashley Norris came away with 119 assists. Hannah Oliver managed 29 digs, 17 kills and seven aces. Maggie Lyn Lumsden had 16 kills and seven blocks. Macy Haney posted eight kills and nine aces. Meredith Trail finished with 34 digs.

Sand Rock’s junior varsity also got off to a good start to the season by going 4-0 to claim the Geraldine Tournament, also on Saturday.

Both Sand Rock teams get back in action on Monday for their home opener against Gaston and Ider. Play begins at 4 p.m.
