Football fans rejoice!

The 2012 season is almost here, and to help celebrate, The Herald’s annual Pigskin Preview can be found inside this week’s edition.

This year’s section is entitled “Busting Through To A New Season” is jam packed with previews, pictures, rosters and schedules for all area high school teams.

You can also read about the state’s more prominent college teams Alabama, Auburn and Jacksonville State.

When you’re done digesting those preview appetizers, head on out to see most of our area teams in jamboree action on Thursday and Friday.

Cedar Bluff is hosting an 8-team jamboree on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Sand Rock. Teams include the Tigers, Gaylesville, Sand Rock, Spring Garden, Fyffe, Saks and Section. Tickets are $6.

The first two-quarter segment begins with Gaylesville taking on Ohatchee. The Trojans will then face Fyffe at 5:45 p.m.

Saks holds down the next two scrimmages against Fyffe (6:30 p.m.) and Sand Rock (7:15 p.m.). Sand Rock and Spring Garden will battle at 8 p.m. The Panthers will then take on Section at 8:45 p.m. Cedar Bluff and Section conclude the action at 9:30 p.m.

Piedmont will also take part in jamboree action Thursday at Jacksonville, then on Friday at 7 p.m., Cherokee County travels to Sardis for a half-only scrimmage.

In local golf action, a tri-generational team set what may have been a new four-person scoring record at the Cherokee County Country Club in Centre.

Billy Mack Garrett, along with two of his sons Wayne and David, and Wayne’s son Dawson fired a 23-under par 48 on the par 71 layout last Saturday. The record score came during the Auburn vs. Alabama “Iron Ball” Golf Classic.

Cherokee Club Manager Steve Baker said “I don’t recall a lower score in a scramble. It is really a remarkable accomplishment.”

The annual tournament generated over $3,500 in scholarship funds, which are disbursed by the local alumni clubs. The Garretts’ 23-under par gem topped the runner-up foursome of Jake Minnix, Lee Morgan, Jeremy Rieger and Nick Wheeler by just two strokes.

Third place ended in a three-way tie at 16-under. Steve Baker, Adam Weaver, Trai West and Kaleb Kines picked up the prize after the scorecard playoff. Also, shooting a 55 were Eddie Robertson, Bill Trammell, Terry Adams and Johnny Bentley.

The other team involved in the tiebreaker was Mark Jason Green, Kim Nichols, Bill Bright and Don Cothran.

Tournament prizes for long drives were claimed by Linda Payne (women), Terry Adams (senior men) and Dawson Garrett (junior men). Floyd Urgent and Primary Care of Centre presented $25 Wal-Mart gift cards to David Garrett (#5 & #17), Jeff Woodall (#8) and Renae Coley (#12) for their closest to the pin shots on the par 3 holes.
