Maybe there’s something to writing this column on Monday morning. I tried it on for size last week and went 7-0, so why mess with a good thing?

Several of last week’s games could have gone either way. I was just fortunate, I guess.

Contrary to what WEIS Radio Sports Director Kurt Duryea may think, I didn’t get any help from odds maker Danny Sheridan. I heard he was still be looking for the Auburn bag man, and he wasn’t taking many calls anyway. Man, that guy’s elusive!

So, here we are at Week 6. From here on out, it’s about playoff positioning baby! Some of our teams are in great shape for the postseason. Others … not so much, but they still have a little hope.

Some interesting games are slated for this week, including a battle of unbeaten teams at Cedar Bluff.

Well, enough chit-chat. Let’s see if I can go 6-for-6 in Week 6.

Woodville (0-5) at Spring Garden (5-0): Two teams heading in opposite directions in this one. The only thing Spring Garden should be wary of is not looking ahead to next week’s showdown at Collinsville. Here’s thinking Jason Howard’s Panthers keep their best start in school history perfect … Spring Garden 49, Woodville 7.

Jacksonville Christian (1-4) at Gaylesville (1-4): I was glad to see the Trojans finally get their first of the season last week, and boy, did they take out some frustration on Coosa Christian.

Senior tailback John David Jennings ran wild. He accumulated 340 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns in the 40-13 victory.

I think Jennings will be a vital part of the Trojans making it two in a row on Friday … Gaylesville 35, Jacksonville Christian 21.

Lincoln (3-2) at Cherokee County (0-5): It’s been a long season so far for the Warriors, but the defense played its best game of the season last week against Ider.

They held the Hornets to just two touchdowns and under 200 yards, but Cherokee County still fell on the short end of a 14-13 heartbreaker.

This week, Lincoln visits Warrior Stadium for the first time ever. The Golden Bears will get a tough game from their hosts, but I still think they’ll escape with a win … Lincoln 28, Cherokee County 24.

Piedmont (5-0) at White Plains (2-3): One of my favorite quotes from last week came from Piedmont senior defensive end Marquez Gamble, who had a big night Thursday in the 7-0 victory against Leeds.

“It’s all about heart and passion,” Gamble said. “When we have our backs against the wall, we just have to keep pushing forward.”

I don’t think the Bulldogs will have their backs against the wall this week, but they’ll continue pushing forward at White Plains … Piedmont 42, White Plains 13.

Sand Rock (3-2) at Fyffe (5-0): The Wildcats could really shake things up in Class 2A, Region 7 with a win at third-ranked Fyffe Friday. A Wildcat victory would put both teams at 3-1 in the region and make the region championship chase a little more interesting the final month of the regular season.

However, the Red Devils have had the Wildcats number in the series. They’re 12-3 all-time against Sand Rock and have won the last three meetings. Playing at Long-Ridgeway Stadium isn’t going to be an easy task … Fyffe 35, Sand Rock 24.

Collinsville (5-0) at Cedar Bluff (5-0): Talk about your close games.

The past four years, this game has been decided by an average of less than a touchdown (5.75 points for those scoring at home). There’s no reason for me to think this game won’t be as close.

Collinsville got its first true test of the season last week and passed with a 38-19 victory over Donoho. This week, it’s Cedar Bluff’s turn to get tested.

After seeing both teams this season, I think the Tigers have just a flicker of more firepower. And, since the Tigers are playing in front of the home folks at L.D. Bruce Field, I think that might give them the edge to put the Panthers’ three-game winning streak against them to an end … Cedar Bluff 27, Collinsville 21.
