Warriors fall to 0-2 with 45-22 setback at Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA – Alexandria senior running back Justice Owens rushed for 204 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns to lift the Valley Cubs to a 45-22 football victory over the Cherokee County Warriors Friday.

Owens got Alexandria (1-1, 1-0 Class 4A, Region 5) going with a 78-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, putting the Valley Cubs up 7-0.

After a Warrior turnover, senior quarterback Tanner Wells added to Alexandria’s advantage by connecting on a 9-yard pass to senior tight end William Owens. The extra point made it 14-0 Valley Cubs.

Wells finished the game completing 6 of 13 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns.

Cherokee County (0-2, 0-1) finally found the end zone later in the first quarter on senior quarterback Tanner Young’s 11-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Jacob Whitmire. Eric Burgess added the extra point, cutting Alexandria’s lead in half at 14-7.

Young completed 14 of 34 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Wells threw his second touchdown pass of the night following the Warrior score – a 23-yard connection with Owens to make it 20-7 Valley Cubs.

The Warriors answered with junior running back Ty Green’s 64-yard touchdown run. Burgess’s extra point brought the Warriors within six at 20-14.

Green led the Warrior rushing attack with 136 yards on 17 carries and a score. He also caught five passes for 56 yards.

Alexandria capped the first-quarter scoring with Owens’ 5-yard touchdown run, putting the Valley Cubs in front 26-14.

That score held up until the third quarter, when Wells connected with Owens again – this time on a 28-yard scoring strike – to push the Valley Cub lead to 32-14.

Cherokee County closed the gap to 10 points in the fourth quarter on Young’s 9-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Wade Griffith. The Warriors were successful on the 2-point conversion, making the score 32-22 in favor of the Valley Cubs.

Alexandria put the game away with two fourth-quarter scores – a 66-yard run by Owens and a 15-yard interception return by senior linebacker Evan Farlow.

Cherokee County looks to bounce back with its first home game of the season next Friday against Jacksonville. Alexandria travels to Hokes Bluff.
