Woodland girls down Glencoe, clinch berth in Cherokee Basketball Invitational championship
CENTRE – The girls game of the day at the Cherokee Basketball Invitational featured two ranked teams in their respective classes when Class 2A, No. 3 Woodland battled Class 3A, No. 6 Glencoe on Monday.
Auburn signee Courtney Strain scored a game-high 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five steals in Woodland’s 70-65 victory over the Lady Yellowjackets.
The win clinched a berth in the Cherokee Invitational championship game against Chattooga, Ga. That game will be played at the Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena at 6 p.m.
The Lady Bobcats (10-0) jumped out to a 16-7 first-quarter lead before Glencoe (10-2) went on a 24-14 run to take a 31-30 edge at the half.
The two teams battled down the stretch, but a pair of key free throws in the waning moments by Leah Strain helped the Lady Bobcats preserve the win.
Leah Strain finished with 26 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists. She was 10 of 14 from the free-throw line.
Shanna Strain finished with seven points for Woodland.
Glencoe was led by Breonna Cole’s 21 points. Alexa Cassidy added 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Lexie Stanley had eight points. Meagan Clark and Baileigh Little both finished with seven points.

Cedar Bluff 68, Gaylesville 39 – Jessica Brannon and Lindsey Lambert both posted 14 points to lead Cedar Bluff past Gaylesville 68-39 in a consolation bracket game on Monday.
Brannon added five steals while Lambert also had six rebounds and three steals for the Lady Tigers (4-6).
Hannah Leach and Audrianna Hargitt netted 11 points apiece. Leach also had seven rebounds and four steals. Hargitt also grabbed six boards.
Candria Dupree came away with 10 points and five rebounds. Tanessa Fife finished with six points, eight boards and five steals. Mechelle Adams ended with five assists, four rebounds and two points.
Gaylesville (2-10) was led by Krysta Nichols’ 12 points. Kaitlin Hammett connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Katie Lemons had six points and Casey Stone finished with five points.
Cedar Bluff held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter and increased that advantage to 30-16 at halftime. The Tigers led 49-36 at the end of three quarters.
Cedar Bluff advances to Tuesday’s consolation bracket final, where it will meet Sand Rock at 3 p.m.
Sand Rock 44, Spring Garden 29 – Gena Farmer scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five steals to lead Sand Rock to a 44-29 victory over Spring Garden in a consolation bracket game on Monday.
Karlie Anderson added 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for the Lady Wildcats (8-6). Paige Ashley finished with five points, five steals and a pair of assists.
Jordan Sides led Spring Garden (7-5) with seven points. Katy Rickman had six points and Kelsey Turner finished with five points.
The Lady Panthers held a 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before Sand Rock got on a run. The Wildcats led 27-18 at the break and held a 41-23 advantage at the end of three quarters.
Sand Rock advances to Tuesday’s consolation bracket final, where it will meet Cedar Bluff at 3 p.m.
Boys
Glencoe 54, Spring Garden 37 – Brock Kirby scored 12 points to lead Glencoe to a 54-37 victory over Spring Garden on Monday in a consolation bracket game.
Trey Hill and Clint Ponder both added eight points for the Yellowjackets (6-5). Rhett Norman and Jacob Freeman both finished with six points.
Andrew Maddox led Spring Garden (3-8) with 11 points. Jake Scott added seven points. Kaleb Morris and Corey Anderson both finished with six points.
Glencoe held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and built a 24-15 advantage at the half. The Yellowjackets led 44-29 at the end of three quarters.
Glencoe advances to Tuesday’s consolation bracket final, where it will face Chattooga, Ga., at 4:30 p.m.
Chattooga, Ga. 78, Gaylesville 34 – Chattooga jumped out to a 19-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 78-34 victory over the Trojans in a consolation bracket game on Monday.
The Indians (4-3) were led by Nathan Schuster’s 17 points. Senorise Perry and Rashad Ramsey both added 10 points. Josh Stewart had eight points and Oljawon Blair finished with six points.
Clay Joseph led Gaylesville with 11 points. Gable Lawson finished with six points.
Chattooga advances to Tuesday’s consolation bracket final, where it will meet Glencoe at 4:30 p.m.
