Sand Rock's Chambers among the stars

Sand Rock setter Chelsea Chambers gets another chance to be on a statewide stage this week. She represents the Cherokee County area in Huntsville on the North volleyball squad as it takes on the South team on Thursday at 2 p.m. The best-of-five series will be played at the University of Alabama-Huntsville as part of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Sports Week.

Chambers, the first Sand Rock volleyball player ever selected to the North team, led the Lady Wildcats to their third straight Class 2A state tournament semifinal appearance in Pelham last season. She posted 1,022 assists and 84 blocks in 116 games as the Lady Wildcats finished with a 37-7 record.

Joining Chambers on the North team is Gaston’s Jessica Wilburn, Jacksonville’s Elizabeth Neisler, Briarwood Christian’s Amy Hale, Curry’s Skylar Key, Mountain Brook’s Alexandra Morgan, Lexington’s Loren Olive, Oak Mountain’s Devin VonPingel, Grissom’s Naomi Wells, Huntsville’s Tanequa Whitman, Bob Jones’s Kelly Wilson and Lawrence County’s Summer Wilkerson.

The North team is coached by Lexington’s Melissa Hammond of Lexington and Bob Jones’s Laura Burke.

South players are St. Paul’s Catherine Rebarchak and Nancy Taylor, Pelham’s Whitney Billings and Whitney Hudson, Bayside Academy’s Lauren Reibe, St. James’s Sarah Stout, Murphy’s Elizabeth Clough, Robertsdale’s Anna Shartzer, Rebekah Raymond and Samantha Butcher, Carroll’s Akia Borders and Alabama Christian’s Christina Hayes.

The South coaches are Thompson’s Carla Ragland and Bayside Academy’s Ann Schilling.

Speaking of All-Star Sports Week, another area athlete will be among the stars in Huntsville on Friday as Piedmont running back D’Eric Jackson will suit up for the North football team.

Jackson (5-foot-9, 185 pounds) rushed for 893 yards and scored 19 touchdowns on 104 carries as Piedmont (10-3) made the Class 2A state quarterfinals last season. He also had 35 receptions for 423 yards and four touchdowns and had 504 total yards and three touchdowns in kick and punt returns.

Jackson has already signed a football scholarship with West Alabama.

The game will be played at Lewis Crews Stadium on the campus of Alabama A&M University at 7 p.m..
