HUNTSVILLE – Being selected to an all-star team can sometimes be a nerve-wracking experience.

Last Thursday, Sand Rock setter Chelsey Chambers admitted she had a few butterflies in her stomach before she took the court during the North-South volleyball matches in Huntsville, but once game time rolled around her adrenaline took over.

Even though Chambers and the North squad lost in four games to the South All-Stars (19-25, 28-30, 28-26, 21-25), she said it was a good experience for her to be amongst the state’s best.

“It was a privilege to be there,” Chambers said. “I played with a lot of talented girls. All of them are big-time leaders. They were the best from each team.”

“I think this will give us (Sand Rock) a big confidence boost this season with a player on the team from Sand Rock being up there. It just shows that nothing’s impossible.”

Chambers didn’t get much playing time in the matches, but managed to make her mark when she was in the game. She said she was thankful to have a lot of support from coaches, friends and family in the Rocket City cheering her on.

“I didn’t get a lot of playing time, I guess because I was from a small school,” Chambers said. “I subbed in and out and had a few assists and a block.”

Chambers, the first volleyball player from Sand Rock to ever make the North All-Star team, was selected to the team after leading the Lady Wildcats to their third straight Class 2A state tournament semifinal appearance in Pelham last season as a setter. She posted 1,022 assists and 84 blocks in 116 games as the Lady Wildcats finished with a 37-7 record.

Hitters Catherine Rebarchak and Whitney Billings of Pelham controlled the nets to pace the South victory. Rebarchak, named the South MVP, and Billings each had 14 kills on the day. Rebarchak also had eight blocks and many key stops in the South’s marathon 30-28 win in game two.

Setters Nancy Taylor of St. Paul’s and Lauren Reibe of Bayside Academy also had 16 assists each for the South. Reibe added 11 digs.

Leading the North was setter Kelly Wilson of Bob Jones. The North MVP dished out 28 assists and had four kills. She also had five digs. Naomi Wells of Grissom had 18 kills, four service aces and seven digs while Loren Olive of Lexington added seven kills and 13 digs.
