A good crowd attended this year’s event. The silent auction was held in the Gadsden State Community College-Cherokee Arena and the live auction and soup supper was held in the GSCC-Cherokee Community Room.
As in the past, merchants from across the county contributed items for both the live and silent auctions.
Keith Baldwin of American Auctioneers and crew conducted the live auction.
“They are probably up to 80 bidders or something out there now,” said Wayne Smith, manager, Cherokee County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “Some of them got one bid between the two of them. I think we are doing pretty well.”
Smith said he enjoyed himself during his first Souper Supper and Auction, one of the Red Cross Chapter’s main fundraisers.
“I think it is fun,” said Smith. “Instead of just asking people for money, It gives them something to look forward to. And it is kind of fun bidding against each other.”
This year’s event featured musical entertainment by MJT and Marie.
“I think the music is good this year,” said Smith. “ That is something new that we have had. It is keeps things moving a little bit.”
Wendy’s Chili won first place in the soup contest this year. Pat’s Catering and Arctic Now tied for second place. Judges were JoAnn Strickland, Candace Drive and Charlotte Strickland from the Portersville Homemakers Club.
Other Soup, chili or Brunswick stew donors this year were BBQ and More, Betty’s Pancake Pantry, Centre Shell Mart, Gridiron, Houtz & Wright, Karen Hogan, Lanny’s, Lighthouse, Mamma J’s, Piggly Wiggly (Centre) Sageberry Restaurant and Walk Hard BBQ.
Cakes/cornbread contributors included Ann Guice, Blairtown Homemakers Club, Bobbie Ashley, Deborah Hardin, Jean Gossett, Jimmie Sue Miller, Kirks Grove Homemakers Club, Leesburg Homemakers Club, Marie Wright, McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club, Sand Rock Homemakers Club and Sarah Bright.
For the finale of the event, Baldwin, with the assistance of a volunteer from the audience, drew for the big screen television. Winner was Scott Mackey.
We appreciate all of you for taking the time to help in putting this together,” said Baldwin. “This is a big undertaking. Thank you for asking us.”
