Weekend Basketball Roundup: Scales leads Cedar Bluff boys past Gaston

GADSDEN – Tyric Scales scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Cedar Bluff Tigers to a 54-49 win on Friday.

Marcus Reese added eight points and had 10 assists. Kyle Crane finished with six points.

Jared Bogle led Gaston with 16 points.

Cedar Bluff jumped out to a 24-5 advantage after the first quarter and led 32-19 at the half. Gaston cut into the Tigers lead at 41-33 at the end of the third quarter, but Cedar Bluff held on for the win.

Alexandria 76, Cherokee County 59 – At Alexandria, guard Ethan Vinyard scored 37 points, leading the Valley Cubs in the Class 4A, Area 12 battle on Friday.

Reggie Patterson added 13 points as the Cubs improved to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the area.

Cherokee County got 17 points from Keon Rucker, 13 from Coty Blanchard and 12 from Colin Perry.

Collinsville 76, Spring Garden 60 – In Collinsville, the Panthers led by seven in the second quarter before Collinsville went on a 14-0 run to take a seven-point lead it would not surrender.

Jake Scott led Spring Garden with 26 points. Andrew Allen added 14 points.

Piedmont 91, Pleasant Valley 70 – In Pleasant Valley on Friday, Piedmont had five players score in double digits in a rout.

Marquise Diamond and Jamal Johnson both scored 19. Anthony Angle added 16. Christian Cantrell scored 15 and Holloway came away with 10.

For the Raiders, Cameron Fortenberry scored 19, and Joseph Faucett and Terry Johnson each scored 14.

Sand Rock 69, Gaston 67 (OT) – In Gadsden on Saturday, it was deja vu for Sand Rock. The Wildcats played their second straight overtime game in as many days, only this time they come away with the win.

Justin Mackey’s 3-pointer late in regulation forced overtime, and the Wildcats held on to beat Gaston.

Mackey, who scored a game-high 28 points, got open behind the arc and hit the game-tying 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining in the fourth to tie the game at 58.

Justin Kyser added 18 for Sand Rock (11-8), while Cody Beck had 13.

For Gaston, Jared Bogle scored 26 points and Darius Lewis netted 12.

White Plains 56, Cherokee County 45 – At White Plains on Saturday, Coty Blanchard scored a game-high 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome White Plains.

D.J. Fife added 10 points and Colin Perry had eight points for the Warriors (9-8).

Elgin Bowman led White Plains (17-2) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Carlton Caver and John Raney both had 12 points.

Asbury 58, Cedar Bluff 48 – At Asbury on Saturday, Tyric Scales posted 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough against Asbury.

Marcus Reese added nine points for the Tigers (9-8). Kyle Crane had seven points.

Colby Cowen paced Asbury with 23 points.

Piedmont 69, Glencoe 50 – Piedmont finished the game 14-for-31 from behind the 3-point arc in a rout of Glencoe Saturday.

Marquise Diamond led the charge for Piedmont (13-6, 5-1 Class 3A, Area 10) with all four of his 3-pointers coming in the second quarter, and finished with a game-high 18 points.

Jamaal Johnson chipped in with 14 points, including four 3s. Tay Holloway scored 11, and Cory Sears hit three 3-pointers.

Girls

Spring Garden 62, Collinsville 40 – In Collinsville on Friday, Class 1A, No. 2 Spring Garden stayed hot with a win over Collinsville.

Spring Garden, now 19-2 on the season, is a perfect 10-0 in Area 12 play.

Tara Mullinax led the charge by scoring 31 points. Shelby Malone added eight.

Gaston 62, Cedar Bluff 42 – In Gadsden, Nicole Soignet netted 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as Gaston claimed the win.

Hannah Leach scored eight points and Tanessa Fife added six points for the Lady Tigers., Jess

Brannon finished with five points.

Asbury 62, Gaylesville 46 – Brittany Williams scored 20 points to lead Asbury past Gaylesville on Friday.

Destin McClendon added 15 points and Jessica Pelham had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Rams.

Krista Nichols led the Trojans with 12 points.

Cedar Bluff 55, Asbury 41 – At Asbury, Jess Brannon scored a game-high 25 points to lead Cedar Bluff to the win.

Nicole Soignet and Hannah Leach both netted nine points for the Lady Tigers (7-11). Mechelle Adams came away with five points.

Glencoe 51, Piedmont 46 – On Saturday in Piedmont, No. 2 Glencoe wrapped up the Class 3A, Area 10 title by defeating the Lady Bulldogs.

Glencoe(18-3) finished the season 8-0 in the area and will host the area tournament later this month.

Lindsey Tubb led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and four assists, while Chelsi Mathews scored 11, pulled down eight rebounds and had four steals.

Piedmont’s Raven Prater scored a game-high 18.

Gaston 57, Sand Rock 40 – Kris Lawson and Jessica Wilburn teamed up to lead Class 1A, No. 10 Gaston past Sand Rock on Saturday.

Lawson scored 15, while Wilburn scored 13 and pulled down seven rebounds.

Sand Rock dropped to 10-10 with the loss.
