Shannon Fagan: More honors for Sand Rock football

And you thought football season was over.

The Class 2A, Region 6 football coaches recently announced their All-Region team for the 2008 season. The Sand Rock Wildcats had five players selected the team, as well as two honorable mentions.

Senior quarterback Justin Mackey earned the All-Region Offensive Player of the Year. He completed 139 of 226 passes for 1,728 yards and 11 touchdowns in leading the Wildcats to a 9-2 record.

Mackey also rushed for 404 yards on 95 carries with 10 touchdowns. As a kicker, Mackey connected on all six of his field goal attempts with a long of 41 yards. He also booted 41 of 41 extra points.

Senior Jake Thompson was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. At strong safety, Thompson recorded 47 tackles and snagged five interceptions.

Senior Chris McMahan was selected one at one of the All-Region linebacker positions. McMahan had 53 tackles, including six for losses with two interceptions and a sack last season.

Senior Shane Wells was selected as a defensive back. He posted 70 tackles and had five interceptions last season.

Senior Andy Andrews earned the team’s Defensive Utility Player position. As a linebacker, Andrews tallied 43 tackles with a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery last season.

Honorable mentions went to the Wildcats’ Dex Clanton and R.J. Thornberry.

The Cherokee County Tournament isn’t the only tournament getting underway. The Calhoun County Basketball Tournament shifts into full gear on Monday at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum on Jan. 19.

The Piedmont Bulldogs recently earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament. They will open play against No. 11 Sacred Heart on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Alexandria earned the boys’ top seed.

The Piedmont girls open tournament play against Weaver at 6 p.m.. Anniston is the top team in the girls bracket.

The eighth annual Boaz Youth Basketball Bash will be held Feb. 20-21 at Boaz High School, Boaz Middle School and the Boaz Recreation Center. The entry fee is $75 per team. The entry deadline is Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.

Admission is $5 per day and is good for all gyms.

The Alabama Avengers, a semi-pro adult football team based in Gadsden, will soon be reloading for the 2009 season. The team is looking for players and coaches ages 18 and up for all positions.
