COLLINSVILLE – Class 1A, No. 7 Collinsville got off on a good start to the 2011 football season Thursday night by handing Coosa Christian a 49-0 shutout.

“I’m happy,” Collinsville coach Alan Beckett said. “We felt like the play got sloppy and we lost some focus, but that happens when we play 40 kids with many of them who don’t get to play, and we played four quarterbacks.”

It didn’t take long for Collinsville (1-0) to find the end zone. With 10:29 left in the first quarter, Curtis Williams picked off a Coosa Christian (0-1) pass and returned it 25 yards for the score.

Josh Gogus added a 57-yard touchdown run to extend the Panthers’ lead to 14-0 with 7:56 left in the first.

Quarterback Nathan Coker hit Deshawn Moore on a 71-yard touchdown pass on Collinsville’s next possession to push the lead to 22-0.

Coker called his own number on a 74-yard touchdown run early in the second, giving the Panthers a 29-0 advantage.

Collinsville’s second quarterback of the night, C.J. Jones, hit Williams on a 29-yard touchdown pass with no time left in the half.

Jalyn Martin added an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth to give Collinsville a 42-0 lead.

Late in the fourth, Collinsville’s fourth quarterback of the night, Tanner Nelson, found Brett Bowen for a 56-yard touchdown pass.

Coker finished the game with 2-of-4 completions for 84 yards. He also added 89 yards on four carries. Moore caught three passes for 94 yards.

The Panthers enter Region 7 play next Friday with a road trip to Spring Garden.
