Basketball Roundup: Lawson leads Gaylesville past Valley Head

GAYLESVILLE — Gable Lawson led three Gaylesville players in double figures, helping the Trojans capture a 51-45 basketball victory over Valley Head on Friday.

Lawson finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Trojans (2-4, 1-1 Class 1A, Area 14). Zack Cavin added 12 points and two boards. Cole Murphy finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Gaylesville travels to Collinsville on Tuesday.

Valley Head girls 76, Gaylesville girls 52

GAYLESVILLE — Katlin Hammett came away with 19 points for Gaylesville, but Valley Head came away with a 76-52 victory in Class 1A, Area 14 girls basketball action on Friday.

Taylor Tomlin added 13 and Lauren Hammett had 10 for the Lady Trojans.

Sand Rock boys 72, Ohatchee boys 67

OHATCHEE — Matt Graham scored a game-high 29 points as 10th-ranked Sand Rock earned a 72-67 win Friday over Ohatchee in Class 2A, Area 13 play. Chad Thompson added 13 points for the Wildcats (6-2, 1-1), while Bryant Beard and Skylar Blankenship had nine apiece.

Sand Rock will visit Spring Garden on Saturday.

Sand Rock girls 47, Ohatchee girls 37

OHATCHEE — Emily Langley netted 15 points to lift Sand Rock over Ohatchee 47-37 Friday. Madison McCullough added nine points and six rebounds for the Lady Wildcats (3-7, 3-0). Madison Smith and Amber Ashley posted 16 and 12 rebounds, respectively.

Anniston boys 47, Cherokee County 42

ANNISTON — Richard Barton netted 19 points and Taylor Young added 14 points, but they weren't enough to lift the Cherokee County Warriors to victory on Friday. The Warriors (5-3, 1-1) lost 47-42 at Class 4A, Area 10 rival Anniston.

Anniston (1-0) was led by Monquavis Frazier's 20 points. Mauriceco Massy added nine points for the Bulldogs.

Cherokee County travels to Alexandria on Tuesday.

ANNISTON — Tori Davis tallied 15 points and Candace Blanchard added 13, but the Class 4A, No. 4 Cherokee County Lady Warriors dropped their first game of the basketball season Friday at Area 10 rival Anniston. The final was 43-40.

Darbie Rosser and Melody Berry both added six points for the Lady Warriors (7-1, 1-1).

Collinsville boys 54, Westbrook Christian boys 42

RAINBOW CITY — DeShawn Moore scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lift the Class 1A, No. 9 Collinsville Panthers to a 56-42 victory at Class 2A, No. 9 Westbrook Christian on Friday.

Shon McElrath added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (3-3). Davey Posey posted 11 points and six boards.

Alex Perkins led Westbrook Christian with 13 points. Colin Edwards and Carson Sharp both had 10 points.

Collinsville girls 45, Westbrook Christian girls 44

RAINBOW CITY — Christy Cox’s layup with five seconds remaining Friday lifted Class 1A, No. 5 Collinsville over 2A Westbrook Christian 45-44. Westbrook (3-3) trailed 36-24 going into the fourth quarter before rallying. The Warriors briefly took the lead on Peighton Streip’s basket with 12 seconds to play before Cox and the Panthers (7-3) pulled out the win.

Kiana Ford led Collinsville with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Cox and Kristen Ford scored 13 points each. Kristen Ford also had 13 rebounds. Brittney Tidmore added nine assists for the Panthers.

Courtney Bolton’s 10 points and nine rebounds led Westbrook. The Warriors also got eight points apiece from Lorien Welch, Mary Katherine Catanzaro and Streip.
