SPRING GARDEN - The Cherokee County junior high basketball tournament was held at Spring Garden High School on Saturday.

The fourth seeded Spring Garden Panthers captured the girls’ championship with a 21-10 victory over Gaylesville. Spring Garden opened the day with a win over Cedar Bluff. The Lady Panthers then secured their championship game berth with a win over top-seeded Sand Rock.

Gaylesville punched its ticket to the finals with a win over third-seeded Centre.

Dana Austin coached the Garden girls to the title. Gaylesville was runner-up for the second year in a row. Sand Rock defeated Gaylesville 36-20 in 2011.

Centre coasted to a 54-23 victory over Sand Rock in the seventh grade title game. The Warriors are coached by Claude Hopper.

Last year, Sand Rock edged Centre 40-38 in the seventh grade championship.

Sand Rock, coached by Keith Cofield, downed Cedar Bluff 54-28 in the eighth grade boys’ final. The second-seeded Wildcats defeated Centre in the tournament semifinal.

Cedar Bluff was the top seed in the tournament, but the Tigers struggled to respond to the Wildcats full court pressure. Centre Middle was the defending 8th champion.
