County Commission starts new year with busy planning session

The Cherokee County Commission began the New Year with a rather lengthy meeting on Jan. 9. Chairman Melvyn Salter called the meeting to order with all Commissioners present after a very busy planning session.

Joel Helms announced an American Hero concert featuring Leah Seawright and Wade Trammell on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at Gadsden State Cherokee. Helms said the proceeds would benefit the Wounded Warrior Family.

Chairman Salter also announced a ceremony to recognize firemen and law enforcement at the Chamber Meeting Room sponsored by the American Legion.

Sheriff Shaver reported to the Commission regarding the portable morgue for the Coroner’s office that was obtained through grant monies as well as some other technological equipment provided within the county.

The Commission approved the liability insurance with the Association of County Commission of Alabama for Jan. 1, 2012 through Jan. 1, 2013 for an annual contribution of $114,280.

Excess land redemptions were approved to Reba Ray in the amount of $112.71; David and Irene Sprouse $213.74; Jerry Findley $283.43 and Jack F. Mackey $49.38.

During the planning session, Vickie Robinson with the Cherokee County Herald met with Commissioners explaining an ad in the 2012 Review and Forecast Edition. During the regular meeting, the purchase was approved in the amount of $475.00.

In other business, the Commission:

-Adopted Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of fame Resolutions for Coach Bobby Joe Johnson, Coach Dale Welsh, Coach L. D. Bruce and Coach Roy Knapp.

-Approved the 2012 garbage pickup exemptions.

-Approved Boiler and Burner Service to replace traps, valves and tank to upgrade heating system in Courthouse at a cost of $11,429.75.

-Agreed to replace old lighting in Courthouse with new more energy efficient equipment.

-Declared 2004 Ford as surplus to be auctioned Jan. 21.

-Announced the appointment to the Airport Authority will be made on Feb. 13

Announced an organizational meeting for Neighborhood Watch at the Broomtown Fire Department on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19 with Sheriff Shaver planning to attend that meeting

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be Monday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m.
