In a special called meeting Thursday, Feb. 16, the Centre City Council approved an ordinance raising the salary of the mayor from $600 per month to $1,200 per month, beginning with the 2012 term of office.

In a previous meeting, the council voted on a proposal to raise the salary of the mayor and keep the council members’ salaries the same at $300 per month. Councilman Frankie Kelly opposed, so the council voted on the issue again at the Tues, Feb. 13 meeting.

By law, the vote had to be unanimous for the ordinance to pass before the Feb. 28 deadline.

The council then called the special meeting on Thursday with all members present voting for the ordinance. Council Members Joe Hall, Frankie Kelly and Phillip Roberts were not present.

A unanimous vote was not required for the second reading.

The ordinance will have to run one week in the local newspaper.
