The latest Alabama Sportswriters Association baseball and softball polls were released on Thursday. Six area teams continue to be ranked in their respective classes.
In softball, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors (18-2) moved up a spot to No. 2 and trail only Holtville (23-7) in the Class 4A rankings. Cherokee County hosts Jacksonville at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (18-7) held steady at No. 10 in the Class 2A softball rankings. Sand Rock plays at Geraldine on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
In Class 1A softball, the Spring Garden Lady Panthers (11-7) moved up a spot to No. 7. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to take part in the Pleasant Valley Tournament at Woodland Park in Anniston on Saturday.
Two other area Class 1A teams are receiving consideration. Those two are Cedar Bluff (9-9) and Collinsville (16-13-1).
Baseball’s postseason gets underway on Friday. Three area teams qualified, with two of them ranked.
In Class 1A, the Cedar Bluff Tigers (21-12) maintained their No. 6 ranking. They will host No. 8 Hackleburg (19-9) on Friday in a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Bluff.
Spring Garden (20-16) fell just short of the postseason, but still held their No. 7 ranking.
Collinsville (13-12) qualified for the playoffs as Area 14 runner-up, but was not among the teams ranked in the final regular-season poll. The Panthers travel to Tharptown for Friday’s first round. The two teams play a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.
In Class 3A, the Piedmont Bulldogs (22-9) maintained their No. 9 ranking from last week. The Bulldogs host Glencoe on Friday for a doubleheader. Game times are set for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
