A 17-year-old resident of the Whorton Community drowned while swimming with friends in Weiss Lake off Cherokee County Road 127 over the weekend. The local E911 received a report around 3:30 p.m.

According to reports, the male victim jumped from a pier into approximately eight or nine feet of water. He apparently came up once, yelled for assistance and then went back under.

Responding agencies included the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee county Rescue Squad and the Alabama Marine Police. The victim’s body was recovered around 4:35 p.m.

More details will be released as they become available.

The drowning marked the second death on Weiss Lake this spring. On April 3 of this year, an 11-year-old from Chattanooga was fatally injured in a jet-ski accident while visiting relatives on Weiss Lake behind the Alabama Belle. A 15-year-old involved in the accident was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
