Many area football fans made the trek to Cedar Bluff to see a seven-team scrimmage on Thursday night at Bruce Field. Teams taking part included Cherokee County’s own Sand Rock, Spring Garden, Gaylesville and the host Tigers. Other teams were Donoho, Wellborn and Glencoe.
Here’s a recap of the action.
Gaylesville 13, Donoho 0 – After a scoreless first quarter, Gaylesville took charge early in the second on Cain Higgins’ 3-yard touchdown run with 13:30 left in the scrimmage.
The Trojans put the game away on Donoho’s ensuing possession, as Caleb Leach returned an interception for a touchdown to end the scrimmage’s scoring.
Gaylesville 6, Spring Garden 6 – Spring Garden took its first possession 35 yards and scored with just over 10 minutes left in the opening quarter. Junior running back Trey Littlefield ended the scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. Jake Scott’s extra point sailed wide, leaving the score at 6-0 in favor of the Panthers.
Littlefield finished the scrimmage with 38 yards on four carries with a score.
Gaylesville got on the board in the second quarter thanks to a fumble recovery from Shcoven Warren at the Trojans’ 23-yard line. Four plays later, Warren scored on a 25-yard touchdown run to the left side with 8:20 left in the scrimmage. Warren finished the scrimmage with 38 yards on two carries with a score.
After Warren’s touchdown, Luke Murphy’s extra point was no good, keeping the score tied at 6-6.
The Trojans forced Spring Garden to punt on the Panthers’ ensuing possession and took over at their own 22-yard line late in the scrimmage. Gaylesville’s offense put together a substantial drive into Spring Garden territory, but the clock ran out on the Trojan offense.
Spring Garden 13, Glencoe 7 – After battling Gaylesville to a tie, Spring Garden prevailed over the Glencoe Yellow Jackets thanks to the running back duo of Littlefield and Scott. The Panthers forced Glencoe to punt on its initial possession, and the offense wasted little time by scoring in just three plays that covered 74 yards.
Scott led off the drive with a 44-yard burst to the right side. Littlefield took care of the rest of the drive, as he rushed for a 26-yard score with 10:45 left in the first quarter. Scott’s point after was good, giving Spring Garden a 7-0 lead.
Scott scored on a 3-yard touchdown rush up the middle with eight minutes to go in the second quarter to cap a 14 play, 61-yard drive. His extra point was no good, but the Panthers had built a 13-0 advantage.
Scott finished the scrimmage with 68 yards on just four carries with a touchdown. Littlefield scampered for 64 yards and a score on seven totes.
Glencoe got on the scoreboard with three minutes to go in the scrimmage on a 66-yard touchdown run by junior running back Tim Chunn. Chunn led the Yellow Jackets with 71 yards on five carries and a score.
Sand Rock 14, Glencoe 14 – Sand Rock’s offense made its presence felt on its opening drive against the Yellow Jackets. The Wildcats marched 67 yards in 13 plays capped off by quarterback Justin Mackey’s 1-yard rush up the middle for the score. Mackey’s extra point was good, and with 5:15 left in the first quarter, the Wildcats led 7-0.
Glencoe coughed up the football on the ensuing play that was recovered by Bron Rutledge at the Yellow Jackets’ 19-yard line. Six plays later, Andy Andrews scored on a 4-yard rush to put Sand Rock ahead 13-0. Mackey’s extra point made it 14-0 with just over a minute left in the first quarter.
Andrews finished the scrimmage with 28 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Jake Thompson added 40 yards on six carries.
Glencoe got on the scoreboard with 5:30 left in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets recovered a Wildcat fumble at the 36-yard line, and one play later, senior quarterback Trey Hill connected with Chunn for the touchdown. The extra point was no good, keeping the score at 14-6 in Sand Rock’s favor.
Hill led Glencoe by passing for 55 yards and a score.
After another Sand Rock fumble, Glencoe’s Jason Hollis scored on a 22-yard touchdown run with just under two minutes to go in the scrimmage. The Yellow Jackets went for two and were successful, tying the game at 14-14.
Sand Rock had one last chance to win the scrimmage, but time ran out on the Wildcat offense.
Sand Rock 7, Wellborn 7 – After battling Glencoe to a tie, Sand Rock took on Wellborn and tied the Panthers.
Once again, the Wildcats starting offense marched at will on its first possession. They took the ball 65 yards in eight plays, capped off by Thompson’s 1-yard score with 10:41 left in the first quarter. Mackey’s PAT was good, giving Sand Rock a 7-0 lead.
Thompson led Sand Rock’s offense with 31 yards on six carries with a score.
Wellborn scored its lone touchdown with 8:54 left in the scrimmage on running back Brandon Hughes’ 1-yard rush to cap a 7 play, 80-yard drive. Hughes rushed for 56 yards on the drive and finished the scrimmage with 64 yards on just seven carries.
Hughes also had a chance to help the Panthers get on the scoreboard in the kicking game, but both his field goal attempts were unsuccessful. Hughes missed a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter and had the chance to win the scrimmage with 10.8 seconds remaining with a 41-yarder, but his kick didn’t have the distance.
Cedar Bluff 13, Wellborn 6 – In the nightcap of Thursday night’s scrimmage, the host Cedar Bluff Tigers sent the home folks away happy.
After forcing Wellborn to punt on its first possession, Cedar Bluff punched the ball in the end zone thanks to Skylar Boswell’s 16-yard touchdown rush up the middle. Jim Nelson’s extra point made it 7-0 Tigers with 9:10 remaining in the first quarter.
Boswell finished the scrimmage with 60 yards and a score on just three carries.
Cedar Bluff scored again early in the second quarter on Nelson’s 52-yard scamper to the left side. His extra point was no good, but the Tigers held a 13-0 advantage.
After a Cedar Bluff fumble was recovered by the Panthers inside the Tigers’ 5-yard line, Delrickus Rhoden scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 13-6. The Panthers went for two, but were unsuccessful in the attempt to keep the score in tact.
Rhoden finished the scrimmage with 24 yards on five carries with a touchdown. Hughes ended with 58 rushing yards on seven carries.
The Panthers had one last chance to either tie or win the game, but their drive stalled at the Tigers’ 14-yard line as time expired.
