In basketball, it’s all about positioning, and we’re not just talking about playing on the court.
Teams have battled each other in area play throughout the season, and now area basketball tournaments around the state will tip off beginning on Monday.
The girls get things going first, followed by the boys area tournaments on Tuesday.
Here’s a brief look at the schedule for area girls and boys teams.
Class 1A, Area 12 Girls
The second-ranked Spring Garden Lady Panthers earned the right to host the Class 1A, Area 12 tournament. They will play the winner of Monday’s Cedar Bluff-Asbury game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Ninth-ranked and No. 2 tournament seed Gaston awaits the winner of Monday’s Gaylesville-Collinsville match-up. That game will be played at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
The Class 1A, Area 12 championship will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at Spring Garden. The area winner and runner-up will advance. Those two teams will cross with Area 14 (Skyline, Woodville, Valley Head, Paint Rock Valley, Whitesburg Christian and Athens Bible) in sub-regional action on Feb.12.
Class 1A, Area 12 Boys
Fifth-ranked Asbury is rewarded as the host of the Area 12 tournament. It will face the winner of Tuesday’s Gaston-Spring Garden game on Friday at 7 p.m.
In other semifinal action, ninth-ranked Collinsville will take on the winner of Tuesday’s Gaylesville-Cedar Bluff game on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The area final will be at 7 p.m. on Monday at Asbury. The area winner and runner-up will advance to sub-regional play and will cross with Area 14 (Valley Head, Woodville, Whitesburg Christian, Athens Bible, Paint Rock Valley and Skyline) on Feb. 13.
Class 2A, Area 12 Girls
The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats travel to Geraldine to begin Class 2A, Area 12 tournament play on Thursday. Sand Rock faces Westbrook Christian at 7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to take on the winner of the Geraldine-West End game, also on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Class 2A, Area 12 girls title game is Feb. 9 at Geraldine at 6 p.m. The winner and runner-up will cross with Area 15 (Ider, Section, North Sand Mountain and Fyffe) on Feb. 12.
Class 2A, Area 12 Boys
Geraldine also hosts the Area 12 boys tournament. The Bulldogs take on Westbrook Christian to open the tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. Sand Rock takes on West End at 7:30 on Friday in the other tournament semifinal.
The tournament final is slated for Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Geraldine. The winner and runner-up will advance to cross with Area 15 (Fyffe, North Sand Mountain, Ider and Section) in sub-regional action on Feb. 13.
Class 3A, Area 10 Girls
The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs travel to Glencoe on Thursday to tip off the Area 10 tournament. Piedmont takes on White Plains at 7:30 p.m. Second-ranked Glencoe will face the winner of Monday’s Pleasant Valley-Weaver contest on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Winners of those games advance to the area championship game, which will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Area 10 winner and runner-up will advance to sub-regional action, where they will cross with teams coming out of Area 9 (Altamont, Leeds, Indian Springs, Tarrant and Wellborn) on Feb. 12.
Class 3A, Area 10 Boys
Seventh-ranked White Plains earned the right to host the area tournament and will open play on Friday. The Wildcats will take on the winner of Tuesday’s Weaver-Pleasant Valley battle on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Piedmont Bulldogs take on Glencoe in the other area tournament semifinal on Friday at 6 p.m.

Class 4A, Area 12 Girls
The Cherokee County Lady Warriors take on longtime rival Alexandria to open Class 4A, Area 12 tournament play in Hokes Bluff on Thursday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game takes on the winner of the Hokes Bluff-Jacksonville game, also slated for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Area 12 championship is set for Saturday in Hokes Bluff at 6 p.m. The winner and runner-up will advance to sub-regional play. Both teams will cross with Area 14 (DAR, Guntersville, Plainview and North Jackson) on Feb. 12.
Class 4A, Area 12 Boys
Alexandria is the host to the Class 4A, Area 12 boys tournament. The Valley Cubs open play against Hokes Bluff on Friday at 6 p.m. The Cherokee County Warriors face Jacksonville in the other tournament semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament championship game is slated for Monday at 7 p.m. The winner and runner-up advance to sub-regional action, where both teams will cross with those coming from Area 14 (DAR, Guntersville, Plainview and North Jackson) on Feb. 13.
