Cedar Bluff approves annexation

The Cedar Bluff Town Council, during its Feb. 9 meeting, approved the annexation of the Cobia Bridge Dock and State Docks on Alabama Highway 9.

The annexation, as explained by Mayor Martha Baker and council members, was necessary because of an agreement with Alabama Power for Cedar Bluff to maintain and provide police protection for these areas.

Bobby Mintz, principal of Cedar Bluff School, presented the council with a proposal for expenditures of alcohol monies allocated for 2008. The proposed expenditures were as follows:

-School Wide Expenditures-High School Academic Excellence, $1,200; Elementary Academic Excellence, $1,200; Beta Club and National Honor Society, $500; Drama Club, $600; Library Books and AR Test, $1,500; Elementary Playground and Elementary Gym, $2,500; Youth Practice Fields Maintenance, $1,200; Math and Science Club, $700 and Publicity and Recognition Signs and Banners, $654.

-Athletic Expenditures (65 percent of student population in 7-12 participate in Athletics) – Baseball, $2,000; Football, $2,000; Softball, $2,000; Cheerleaders, $2,000; Volleyball, $2,000; Track, $2,000 and Basketball, $2,000.

Total proposed expenditures were $24,054. The council approved the expenditure proposal by unanimous vote.

The council adopted Resolution 2009-01 concerning fair housing for the CDBG Neighborhood Revitalization Project currently taking place in Cedar Bluff.

Dr. Martha Lavender, assistant to the president, Gadsden State Community College-Cherokee gave an update on Gadsden State-Cherokee and thanked the council for its support.

The council appointed Steve “TT” Dutton and Lane Wilson to the Cedar Bluff Volunteer Fire Department.
