Bess Yarbrough has qualified and seeks re-election to the Centre City Council.

Yarbrough is the mother of three children and five grandchildren. She operated a business for 17 years along with her late husband, Mayor Ed Yarbrough, prior to her seat on the City Council.

Currently, Bess teaches Spanish at Cherokee County High School and Gadsden State Community College. Bess holds a degree in Accounting from Saint Joseph Institute and a Masters and Ed.S. in Secondary Education in Spanish and History from the University of Alabama.

Bess has earned the professional designation of Advanced Certified Municipal Official by the League of Alabama Municipalities. She received training in council meetings, parliamentary procedures, Sunshine Law, Ethic laws, Competitive bid law, municipal revenues and leadership development.

As member of the City Council, Bess has strived to serve the citizens of Centre with dedication, honesty and strong commitment to serve all of the citizens of Centre.

Bess currently serves as Mayor Pro-tem, is chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Police and Airport Committee.

During her years on the City Council, Bess has worked closely with the Mayor and council members for the progress of the City.

Despite the hard economic times, Bess and the Council have improved the Centre Police Department, Fire Department and Street and Sanitation Department.

The City has been able to give a cost of living and once a year raise to all City employees for their hard work and dedication.

In addition, the City has contributed to meals for the City’s senior citizens, the Recreation Department has had tremendous growth, the City streets have been paved and the City has continue to improve the new airport.

Further, the City is very proud of Gadsden State Community College, which the City has committed a significant monetary amount annually.

Bess appreciates the confidence of the citizens of Centre have given her through the years. Bess pledges to continue working hard for the progress of our City and to continue to guard and to spend the funds of the City wisely.
