Switching gears to baseball, Cherokee County’s own Coty Blanchard helped the Cape Cod League’s Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores (21-21) clinch a playoff spot on Aug. 4 with a 6-5 victory over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Blanchard had a walk and a RBI in the win.
Falmouth earned the runner-up spot in the Western Division behind the Cotuit Kettleers (28-14). The two teams battle each other to end the regular season on Monday and Tuesday.
In his last seven games, Blanchard is batting .286 with seven walks, two doubles five runs and two RBIs. For the season (through 36 games), Blanchard is batting .248 with a triple, five doubles, 17 walks, 15 runs and 12 RBIs.
The Cape Cod League playoffs begin Thursday and continue through Aug. 17.

The Alabama versus Auburn four-person golf scramble “Iron Ball” Scholarship Golf Tournament is set for Aug. 18. The annual event takes place at the Cherokee County Country Club on Highway 9 in Centre.
The event is organized and directed by the local alumni clubs with proceeds used for the respective clubs scholarship funds.
To spice up the event, two 26” TVs will be given away at the end of the event. In addition, skill prizes will be awarded for longest drives for men, senior men, junior men and women, as well as closest to the pin shots on holes 5, 8, 12 and 17.
Seniors (65+) and juniors (13 and under) will have the benefit of teeing it up from gold tees, while all women begin from the red tee markers. Men (14 to 64) will play the white tees. The field is limited to the first 18 paid teams with all eyes on the first place prize of $400. A full field of 18 teams will pay to fifth place.
The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the breakfast before the 8 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will also be served at the conclusion of the tournament. Awards and prizes will be presented at that time.
With a team entry fee set at $200, the tournament provides an opportunity to have some fun while benefiting a great cause.

The Collinsville High School football team will have a “Night of Champions” with former Alabama and Auburn football players speaking August 17 in Gadsden. The event will take place at the Noccalula Falls Kiwanis building at 6 p.m. More details as they become available.

City of Centre Parks and Recreation Director Charles Glazner announced the final Soccer Player Development Clinics have been expanded.
Beginning Monday, children ages 4-11 (as of July 31) can attend the clinic at Yarbrough Field on Highway 9 in Centre. A 45-minute session will be conducted at 4 p.m. for ages 5-7 and under. At 5 p.m., the 9-and-under group will receive instruction for 60 minutes. The final session includes children 11-and-under and lasts for 75 minutes.
The program will follow the same format on Aug. 7. Tuesday’s program will be under the guidance of Collinsville Head Coach Julie Little.
Glazner also reported that Centre soccer player sign-ups have been extended through Friday. Player registration forms may be obtained and turned in at Centre City Hall between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
