Cedar Bluff throttles Valley Head

VALLEY HEAD – Cedar Bluff senior DeAngelo Hardy is one of those athletes who’s a threat to score every time he touches the football.

His three second-quarter touchdowns – a 61-yard punt return, a 59-yard kickoff return and a 22-yard scoring reception – helped the Class 1A, No. 8 Tigers earn a 57-30 victory at Valley Head.

Cedar Bluff (2-0, 1-0 Region 7) staked out a 50-point lead at halftime lead and cruised to the win.

After Levi Mintz’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Alex Hairston midway through the first quarter, Dalton Cosby broke off the first of his two touchdown runs – a 19-yarder with 3:56 to play in the first. He added a 40-yard scoring rush with 37 seconds left in the opening stanza to give the Tigers a 21-0 advantage.

Cedar Bluff struck again on a 52-yard DShawn Fife touchdown run 8:06 before halftime. Fife led the Tiger rushers with 114 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns.

Less than a minute later, Hardy returned a punt 61 yards for a score.

Cedar Bluff scored again with Shane Hall’s sack of Ben Kirby in the end zone, and Hardy ran back the ensuing free kick 59 yards for a touchdown.

The Tigers tacked on a 22-yard pass from Mintz to Hardy for the half’s final score. Fife finished the night’s scoring for Cedar Bluff with a 17-yard touchdown run.

Valley Head (0-2, 0-2) owned the fourth quarter.

Trevor Manley scored on a 25-yard run followed by Dallas Gregory’s two-point conversion rush. Kirby had touchdown passes of 25 yards to Joseph Carden and 36 yards to Jeremy Young. Jonathan Cuzzort scored on an 18-yard run.

Cedar Bluff returns home on Friday against Coosa Christian to honor the 50th anniversary of its 1962 championship football team and formally dedicate newly renovated L.D. Bruce Field. Valley Head travels to Spring Garden.
