Times have changed, and the course has too, but Green said he’s been hitting the golf balls better than ever has this past season. He now has another club championship to prove it.
Green bested defending champion David Garrett in match play for the men’s open title on Wednesday. He defeated Lee Morgan and Jake Minnix to reach the finals. Garrett downed Trai West and Scott Hays to advance to the final match.
It’s the second time Green has won the club championship. His other club title came in 2006.
“I’ve won it twice now, but the first time was a lot different than this one,” Green said. “It was more of a relief to win the first one, but it’s an honor to play well and win it again. All the guys I played with (Brian Johnson, Morgan, Minnix and Garrett) are different styles of golfers, and all four of them played well.”
Green said the key to his success on the links Wednesday was putting. He used a putter bought at Golf Fore Less in Rome, Ga.
Several other golfers turned in championship performances on Wednesday.
In the men 75-plus bracket, Jim Dunaway earned the top spot with his win over Jerry Hylton.
In the men 65-76 bracket, Johnny Bentley defeated Eddie Robertson for the title. Bentley advanced via a bye and a victory over Bill Trammell. Robertson dropped Renae Coley and Billy Mack Garrett to face off with Bentley.
In the men 50-64 bracket, Kurt Duryea won the championship. Duryea defeated Steve Baker in the final.
Duryea made his way to the finals by defeating Don Cothran and Dave Hofland. Baker, the defending age group champion, beat Ricky Young and Terry Tallent to square off against Duryea.
