Cherokee County voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved passage of Amendment 1 which would authorize withdrawal of $437 million from the oil and gas royalty Alabama Trust Fund over three years to make up for shortfalls in the general fund.

A total of 3,082 cast ballots in Cherokee County Tuesday with 2,397 voting for the Amendment and 685 voting no.

The absentee votes were an early indication of how the results would go with 48 voting yes and five voting no.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said legislators are committed to paying these funds back if Alabama votes in favor of Amendment 1.
