The eighth-ranked Panthers scored 49 unanswered points through three quarters and defeated Sumiton Christian 49-14 in a Class 1A non-region high school football game Friday night at Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium.
Collinsville coach Alan Beckett used some connections with Jacksonville State to arrange for use of the facility, and his team took advantage of the chance to play on the big stage.
“It was a blessing to get the opportunity to play in this kind of environment,” Beckett said. “It was an unbelievable memory for these kids to have.”
The Panthers (4-0) used big plays to gash a Sumiton team playing without its best player. Running back DeMonte Hobbs was unavailable due to a knee injury.
With the Panthers already leading 14-0, Collinsville scored three long touchdowns in the second quarter.
Quarterback C.J. Jones connected with Deshawn Moore for 49 yards and a 21-0 lead with 8:05 left before halftime.
Jones connected with Edgar Padilla for 38 yards and a score, and Padilla closed the first-half scoring on a 36-yard run at the 2:02 mark.
Collinsville continued building its lead in the third period, with Jones connecting with David Hernandez for 25 yards and touchdown. Moore finished up the Panthers’ scoring with a 66-yard punt return.
“They went into man coverage and put everybody else up on the line, and we feel like we’ve got some pretty good receivers,” Beckett said of his team’s big plays. “We got some big plays out of those players. At the same time, we did get some big plays running, and that probably set up the big plays receiving.”
Daniel Bradford opened the scoring with TD runs of 6 and 22 yards in the first quarter.
Bradford ran nine times for 87 yards. Padilla caught three passes for 102, while Moore hauled in two for 67. Jones was 7 of 8 passing for 244 yards.
Austin Clark picked up touchdowns for Sumiton (2-2) in the fourth period on runs of 3 and 5 yards.
Collinsville returns to Region 7 play next Friday with a key game against Donoho at home. Sumiton will play host to Falkville.
