Cedar Bluff trounces Jacksonville Christian, improves to 4-0

JACKSONVILLE – Cedar Bluff senior quarterback Levi Mintz completed 7 of 11 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 1A, No. 7 Cedar Bluff to a 54-6 Region 7 football victory at Jacksonville Christian on Friday.

The Tigers (4-0, 4-0) posted 461 total yards of offense while holding the Thunder (1-3, 1-3) to just 152 yards.

Senior running back Curtis Abernathy got the Tigers on the board first with a 54-yard touchdown run 57 seconds into the game. He also added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

D’Shawn Fife added to the Tiger advantage with his 33-yard scoring run with 9:44 to go in the first quarter. Abernathy’s point after was no good, but Cedar Bluff was in front 13-0.

Fife finished the game with 115 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

Mintz tossed his first touchdown pass of the night to senior receiver DeAngelo Hardy. This one went for 40 yards at the 5:20 mark of the first quarter, and it gave the Tigers a 20-0 advantage.

Three minutes later, Mintz connected with senior receiver Alex Hairston on a 35-yard scoring toss, increasing Cedar Bluff’s lead to 27-0.

Mintz opened the second-quarter scoring with a 14-yard scoring pass to sophomore receiver Devante Dixon. The extra point failed, but the Tigers were well out in front 33-0 with 10:55 left before halftime.

Fife added his second touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run to give Cedar Bluff a 40-0 lead at halftime.

Mintz threw his final touchdown pass of the night with 4:45 left in the third. This one went for 60 yards to senior receiver Rickey Pendley, and it gave the Tigers a 47-0 advantage.

Jacksonville Christian finally got on the scoreboard on sophomore quarterback Daylon Brackett’s 64-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Tigers’ Nick Combs, keeping the score at 47-6 with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

Cedar Bluff senior running back Shane Hall capped the scoring with a 59-yard touchdown run with 56 seconds remaining in the third.

Cedar Bluff travels to Woodville on Friday, while Jacksonville Christian hits the road to Spring Garden.
