Former Sand Rock basketball player Norris receiving collegiate interest

ALBERTVILLE – Former Sand Rock and current Albertville High School basketball junior forward Riley Norris is among the state’s top basketball prospects in the Class of 2014.

Since Sept. 10, college coaches from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Belmont, Georgia, Georgia State, Harvard, Mercer, Mississippi State, Murray State, Samford, Stanford, Tennessee, UAB, Vanderbilt and Wright State have visited with the 6-foot-7 Norris. He already holds offers from the majority of those schools, plus several others.

Norris has made unofficial visits to Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and UAB. He plans to visit Arkansas, Tennessee, Murray State and Vanderbilt in the coming weeks.

He averaged 17.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.2 assists and 1.1 blocks per game last season for the Aggies (27-8), who reached the Elite 8. Norris also shot 45 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Following last season, Norris was chosen as a Class 5A Basketball Player of the Year finalist by the Alabama Sportswriters Association.

Norris spent this summer on the AAU basketball circuit. He played up with the 2013 class and led his team, the Southeast Elite All-Stars, to several championships. He was selected Most Valuable Player at the Peach State Tournament.
