SAND ROCK – Twice this volleyball season, the Class 2A, No. 6 Sand Rock Lady Wildcats lost to the fifth-ranked West End Lady Patriots.

But the Lady Wildcats defeated West End when it mattered most.

Sand Rock rallied to defeat West End in four games Thursday to earn the Area 13 championship at Walnut Grove. The scores were 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17.

The Lady Wildcats (33-10) earned a spot in the area championship with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-8 victory over Westbrook Christian.

Leading the charge for Sand Rock was Amber Ashley, who posted 37 kills, 16 digs and three blocks on her way to earning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor. Madison Smith came away with 22 kills, 17 digs, 11 blocks and six aces. Kelsey Hayes contributed 23 digs and 13 kills. Hannah Oliver added 11 digs.

Smith, Hayes and Oliver joined Ashley on the Class 2A, Area 13 All-Tournament Team.

Ashley Norris posted 64 assists and 19 digs. Courtney Rowe had eight aces. Meredith Trail finished with 16 digs.

Sand Rock and West End both advance to the North Regional Tournament at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center on Friday. Sand Rock tangles with Area 9 runner-up Ranburne (8-17) at 5:30 p.m. West End battles Area 9 winner Woodland (18-0) at 3 p.m.

Class 3A, Area 10

PIEDMONT – The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs outlasted Saks in five games to claim the Class 3A Area 10 Tournament championship on Thursday in Piedmont. The scores were 25-23, 11-25, 25-19, 12-25, 15-6.

Piedmont (32-14) advances to the North Regional Tournament in Huntsville, where it will face Area 14 runner-up Cordova on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Saks (29-8) faces Area 14 champion Winston County at 9 a.m.

Class 4A, Area 11

JACKSONVILLE – Cherokee County’s season came to an end Thursday in the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament with a loss in three games to ninth-ranked Alexandria in Jacksonville. Scores were unavailable as of this posting.

Alexandria went on to lose in three games in the tournament championship to fifth-ranked Jacksonville. The scores were 25-14, 25-13, 26-24.
