HUNTSVILLE - One thing Cedar Bluff volleyball coach Tiffany Ferguson said a strength of her team is how they've learned to be self-disciplined with last year's Elite Eight run.

Ferguson doesn't have to worry about the Lady Tigers showing up in the big matches, and that proved to be the case once again Friday in the Class 1A North Super Regionals in Huntsville's Von Braun Center.

Senior hitters Audrianna Hargitt and Hannah Leach helped provide the spark the ninth-ranked Lady Tigers needed in their opening-match against Holy Spirit, winning in four games 25-15, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-14.

Hargitt posted 20 kills, 17 digs, five blocks, four assists and two aces. Leach tallied 21 kills, 16 digs, three aces and a block for the Lady Tigers (30-18), who advance to Saturday's second round match against third-ranked Lynn (27-13) at 9 a.m. Lynn swept Whitesburg Christian 25-12, 25-17, 25-10 in other opening-round action on Friday.

"I thought playing at state last year helped us," Ferguson said. "The first two sets, we did well, but the third we got down and quit talking. Our girls managed to get momentum back and kept it throughout the fourth game. I was glad to see them bounce back the way they did."

Abby Storey contributed five kills, 20 digs, two aces and two assists for the Lady Tigers. Brooke Wood came away with 33 assists, nine digs and a kill. Jasmine Adams added nine digs, four assists, a block and an ace. Paige Bryant managed 17 digs and a kill. Marigrace Wilson finished with five kills, three blocks and a dig.

With Holy Spirit now behind them, Ferguson is hoping the Lady Tigers take the next step toward their championship goal on Saturday against Lynn.

"They look pretty solid," Ferguson said of Lynn. "They have three pretty strong hitters, so we're going to try and double-block the middle. I think if we can do that, we should do well."

Class 3A

Piedmont defeats Cordova

HUNTSVILLE - The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs advanced to Saturday's second round of the Class 3A North Volleyball Super Regional Friday with a victory against Cordova.

The scores were 25-12, 25-16, 25-27, 25-18.

With the win, Piedmont improved to 33-14 and will face fifth-ranked Danville (38-17) on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Danville defeated Susan Moore in other opening-round action on Friday 25-4, 25-12, 25-15.
