The Lady Wildcats (35-12) play Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex against second-ranked Providence Christian.
"We are very, very happy to get to the state tournament again," Sand Rock coach Lisa Bates said. "None of these girls have been because it has been three years since we have gone. We needed this."
Sand Rock began the day defeating Altamont to secure a berth in the tournament semifinals. The scores were 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.
Amber Ashley led the way with 21 kills. Madison Smith added eight kills and 15 digs. Ashley Norris managed 30 assists. Kelsey Hayes finished with five kills and 10 digs.
Sand Rock then faced third-ranked Lexington, but lost in five games. The scores were 16-25, 25-22, 25-13, 23-25 and 10-15.
Against Lexington, Smith tallied 20 kills. Ashley added 19 kills and 18 digs. Hayes had 10 kills and 22 digs. Norris contributed 41 assists. Hannah Oliver finished with 16 digs and four aces.
The loss sent the Lady Wildcats to the consolation bracket, where they faced area rival and fifth-ranked West End.
West End defeated Sand Rock in four games, 18-25, 18-25, 25-11 and 23-25.
"That (Lexington match) took it all out of us," Bates said. "It did prove to us that we can play with and beat teams like that. We had no juice physically or mentally left for the West End match."
Ashley led the Lady Wildcats against West End with 15 kills and five blocks. Smith tallied 10 kills and three blocks. Hayes had four kills and nine digs. Meredith Trail came away with 10 digs. Ashley Norris finished with 25 assists.
