It appears Cherokee County can count itself among the nation’s enthusiastic voters as bigger numbers are turning out to the polls this Election Day 2012.

The ROC in Centre, which is one of the county’s largest precincts had a full parking lot shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Jan Cox, of Leesburg, said she voted at Leesburg Volunteer Fire Department shortly after 8 a.m. and she was number 127.

Cox works as secretary for Cedar Bluff First Baptist Church which is another prominent voting place in Cherokee County. Shortly after 11 a.m., more than 436 had voted, she said.

“Mr. Claude Hooper, one of my teachers, instilled that into us how important it is to vote,” noted Cox. “He would say, ‘when you turn 18, you need to register and I want to see your cards.’ I showed him my card. And I have voted in every election since.”

Said Cox, ‘I may not have always been as involved as I have been in this election, but I have always voted.’”

And as the numbers continue to come in, the Herald will report what the day brings.
