MR. BERNARD DONALD (HAP) SHAHAN

Mr. Bernard Donald (Hap) Shahan, 87, of Cave Spring, passed away Saturday morning, January 5, 2013, in a Rome hospital following a lengthy battle with heart disease. A native of LaFayette, Georgia. Mr. Shahan attended the University of Georgia, Port Andrew College in Texas, and Coosa Valley Technical College in Rome. A veteran of the U. S. Navy from 1943 until 1946, Mr. Shahan served as a Radioman Class II in the South Pacific. Following World War II, Mr. Shahan returned home to farm during the summer months, and was a commercial fisherman in Key West, Florida during the winter. From 1964 until 1970, Mr. Shahan was associated with radio station WTTI in Dalton, where he was the Engineer and an announcer.

Mr. Shahan moved his family to Rome in 1970, and found his passion of teaching electronics at the Coosa Valley Technical High School from 1970 until 1980, and at the Coosa Valley Technical College from 1980 until his retirement in 1990. He earned several teaching awards while teaching, including the Georgia State Award of Outstanding Teacher of the Year in Trade and Industrial Education for the years 1974-1975, and 1975-1976. Mr. Shahan was a longtime member of the Community Chapel Baptist Church, and many life-long friendships were formed there.

Besides his parents, Mr. Shahan was preceded in death by a brother, James Shahan.

Mr. Shahan is survived by his wife, the former Margret Anne Grasham, son, Steve Shahan of Cave Spring; daughters, Mrs. Tracie Schmiedl and her husband Jeff of Jacksonville, Mrs. Rebecca Paschal and her husband Scott of Brush Creek, Tenn., five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sisters, Mrs. Clara Lee of Valdosta, Mrs. Nell Kay of Rock Springs, Mrs. Doris McClendon of East Ridge, Tenn., brother, Howard Shahan of Villanow, Georgia, a special friend, Andy Walker.

Funeral services for Mr. Shahan will be held Tuesday afternoon, January 8, 2013, at 3:00 P.M. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home with his Pastor, Rev. Max Tucker and his wife’s cousin, Rev. Charles Carnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Cave Spring Cemetery with the Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion providing military rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 pm until the funeral hour.
