Friday Basketball Roundup: Lady Warriors honor state championship teams with win over Glencoe

CENTRE - Cherokee County basketball coach Travis Barnes says his current Lady Warriors look at the 1992 and 1993 Cherokee County High School girls basketball state championship team pictures every day.

He says those photos are a constant reminder to them of the basketball tradition they set and hopes it inspires them to add to that championship legacy.

On Friday, the Class 4A, No. 10 Lady Warriors welcomed members of those teams for their 20th anniversary when they hosted Class 3A, No. 10 Glencoe. They wore the uniforms of the 1993 team, along with warm-ups from the 1992 team, and wore them well.

Behind 18 points from Tori Davis and 13 points from Darbie Rosser (including three 3-pointers), the Lady Warriors claimed a 51-32 victory to improve to 18-5 on the season.

Chelsey Ray contributed eight points. Madison Brannon sank a pair of treys to finish with six points.

Jordan Sims and Laura Poovey both had seven points apiece to lead Glencoe (17-8).

Cherokee County led throughout the game. The Lady Warriors held a 16-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 29-17 lead at halftime. Cherokee County pushed its lead to 42-19 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Warriors host Ashville on Monday.

Glencoe boys 58, Cherokee County boys 50

CENTRE - JoJo Diamond sank three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, but they weren't enough to lead the Cherokee County Warriors to victory Friday. They lost to visiting Glencoe 58-50.

Tony Pruitt added 12 points for the Warriors (5-17).

Austin Hancock led the Yellowjackets (15-9) with 25 points. Anthony Morris added 12 points and Dillon Tidmore tallied 10 points.

Cherokee County led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Glencoe charged out in front 30-27 at halftime. Glencoe maintained a 41-32 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Cherokee County hosts Ashville on Monday.

Sand Rock girls 56, Sylvania girls 41

SAND ROCK - Madison Smith scored 20 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead Class 2A, No. 9 Sand Rock to a 56-41 victory over visiting Sylvania on senior night.

Amber Ashley added 11 points, four boards, two assists and two steals for the Lady Wildcats (17-6). Courtney Rowe contributed eight points, 10 rebounds, six steals, a block and an assist. Emily Langley finished with six points, four rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot.

In the boys game, the Wildcats fell by the final of 59-37 to drop to 10-13 on the season. No further information was available.

Sand Rock travels to Cedar Bluff on Monday.

Piedmont girls 52, White Plains girls 21

WHITE PLAINS - The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs secured the Class 3A, Area 10 regular season title with a 52-21 victory at White Plains on Friday.

BreAnna Thompson led the Lady Bulldogs (19-6) with 16 points. Sarah Garner added 10 points and Brittany Holloway finished with eight points.

The Lady Bulldogs host Cherokee County on Tuesday and will host the area tournament beginning on Feb. 4.

Collinsville boys 59, Etowah boys 52

COLLINSVILLE - DeShawn Moore tallied 20 points and five rebounds to lead Class 1A, No. 3 Collinsville to a 59-52 win over Class 5A Etowah on Friday.

David Hernandez and Davey Posey both posted 13 points for the Panthers (21-2). C.J. Jones finished with four points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Collinsville held a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained that two-point margin at halftime, leading 26-24. Etowah took a 41-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Collinsville hosts Parkway Christian on Tuesday.

Collinsville girls 52, Etowah girls 42

COLLINSVILLE - Christy Cox came away with 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Collinsville Lady Panthers to a 52-42 victory over visiting Etowah on Friday.

Kiana Ford added 15 points and six boards for the Lady Panthers (19-4). Brittney Tidmore finished with eight points and seven assists.

Collinsville took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 28-17 advantage at halftime.

Collinsville hosts Parkway Christian on Tuesday.
