The month of January is winding down, meaning National Football Signing Day is just a few days away.

As usual, the Piedmont Bulldogs will have their share of signings. According to Bulldog head coach Steve Smith, linebacker Jamie Major should sign with Samford, while offensive lineman Austin Bishop is expected to ink with Murray State.

Smith also said several other Bulldog players, including Marquez Gamble, Dillon Terry, Laphonso Burroughs and Collin Bradley, could also sign that day.

Piedmont’s signing day will take place on Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Piedmont High School gym.

No other football signings are expected to take place on Feb. 6, but several other local athletes could sign at a later date.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control approved the Super 6 Football Championship audit and the financial reports for the state volleyball, cross country and swimming championships at its winter meeting Wednesday at the AHSAA State Office.

The Super Regional Volleyball Tournament, making its debut last November in Huntsville and Montgomery, proved to be a major success, AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said.

“The super regionals were well attended and a success financially,” he said.

Savarese said 2012 cross country and swimming championships were the most successful ever financially, “and our schools did not have to pay any entry fee for either championship event which was an additional saving to our member schools,” he said.

The Super 6 attendance was the best it has been in the last five years, the audit showed.

The Central Board also heard a presentation from current AHSAA contributing partner, Play On Sports, a digital internet streaming company.

Central Board member Dr. Craig Pouncey of the State Department of Education also gave a report concerning a recent meeting with state legislators to discuss school safety and athletic events.

Savarese reported that the AHSAA has had an emergency plan in place for more than two years requiring event hosts to have such plans in writing.

In other action, the Central Board approved the 2012 football playoff financial report (first four rounds). The organization also approved expenses for the 2013 Final 48 state basketball tournament and gave approval to the AHSADCA to explore options concerning the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star football and basketball games.

University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban will be the keynote speaker at the sixth annual AHSAA Principals and Athletic Directors Conference. The event will be held at Montgomery’s Renaissance Convention Center April 2-3.

Saban has guided the Crimson Tide to three BCS National Championships in the last four seasons. He will address the state’s principals and athletic directors on April 3.

“We are excited and honored to have Coach Saban speak to our member schools,” Savarese said. “He is a speaker in big demand and this conference falls during Alabama’s spring training, a very busy time for him.

“We appreciate his commitment to our state and to our high schools. He is a highly motivated and successful leader who will speak to our school administrators about effective leadership.”

Saban has compiled a 154-55-1 record as a college head coach and has gone 61-7 in the past five seasons in Tuscaloosa, which includes a 35-5 mark in regular-season conference play. His Alabama record includes four SEC championships and six SEC West titles.

In 2012, the Tide reached the 10-win milestone for the fifth consecutive season under Saban.

Savarese and recently retired Scottsboro High School athletic director Larry Morris, a longtime Central Board member, will also speak at the conference on April 3.

Leadership training courses will also be offered on April 2.
