Thursday Spring Sports Roundup: Cedar Bluff softball team claims first win

GAYLESVILLE – Jennifer Garmon went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and scored three times to lead the Cedar Bluff softball team to its first win of the season, an 18-4 decision at Class 1A, Area 13 rival Gaylesville on Thursday.

Emilie Shankles was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored three runs for the Lady Tigers (1-5). Destinie Grace went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Katie McGinnis added a hit and three RBIs.

Kaitlyn Kilgro picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Tigers. She tossed six innings, giving up four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Both teams play in the Cherokee Invitational today at the Gadsden State-Cherokee Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers open pool play against Jacksonville Christian at 4 p.m. Gaylesville opens against Sand Rock, also at 4 p.m.

Sand Rock 12, West End 2

SAND ROCK – The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats belted out 14 hits, leading to a 12-2 victory over Class 2A, No. 6 West End in Area 13 softball action on Thursday.

McKenna Morgan, Taylor Rogers and Madison Smith all had three hits each for the Lady Wildcats (5-1, 2-0). Smith, who went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, drove in six runs and scored another. Morgan had three doubles with two RBIs. Rogers went 3-for-4, including a pair of doubles, and drove in another run.

Hannah Oliver was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Kelsey Hayes went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice. Courtney Williams had a hit and scored a run. Madalyn Oliver had a hit and a RBI.

Morgan picked up the win in the circle. She tossed six innings, giving up just two runs on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Sand Rock hosts the Cherokee Invitational on Thursday at the Gadsden State-Cherokee Softball Complex. The Lady Wildcats take on Gaylesville in pool play at 4 p.m.

Baseball

Spring Garden 10-14, Coosa Christian 0-1

SPRING GARDEN – Class 1A, No. 5 Spring Garden completed a baseball sweep of Area 13 rival Coosa Christian on Thursday. The Panthers took the first game 10-0 and won the nightcap 14-1.

In the first game, Will Penton picked up the win after tossing a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts in five innings.

Grant Benefield led the Panthers (9-4) at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a run. Andrew McLarty was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Will Westbrook, Josh Hale and Riley Austin each added a hit.

In the second game, McLarty picked up the win after pitching all five innings. He allowed four hits and fanned eight.

Hale led the Panthers at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Benefield was 2-for-3 with two runs. Penton, Westbrook, McLarty, Austin and Jake Grogan each contributed hits. Will Ivey walked twice and scored two runs.

Spring Garden travels to Faith Christian of Anniston for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

Golf

Spring Garden wins tri-match against Cherokee County, Ohatchee

CENTRE – Dalton Kerr shot 39 and Jay Prater holed a 41 to lead the Spring Garden golf team to a tri-match win over Cherokee County and Ohatchee on Thursday at the Cherokee County Country Club.

The Panthers totaled 189 as a team. The Warriors came in second at 207, followed by Ohatchee at 211.

Trent Edwards led the Warriors with a 39. Dalton Thrasher topped Ohatchee with a 46.
