Cherokee County, Sand Rock, Cedar Bluff all go 2-0 in pool play of Cherokee Softball Invitational

CENTRE - Cherokee County softball teams faired well Friday in the Cherokee Softball Invitational at the Gadsden State-Cherokee Softball Complex on Friday.

The Cherokee County Lady Warriors, Sand Rock Lady Wildcats and Cedar Bluff Lady Tigers all went 2-0 in pool play. All three will be top seeds Saturday in their respective brackets in Saurday's single-elimination tournament which features 18 teams.

Class 4A, No. 4 Cherokee County (5-1) blanked both Crossville and Class 3A, No. 2 Glencoe. The scores were 12-0 in four innings and 4-0 in five innings respectively. The Lady Warriors will play an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in its half of the Maroon bracket.

Sand Rock (7-1) defeated Gaylesville 15-2 and Collinsville 7-1 to earn the top seed in its half of Saturday's White bracket. Sand Rock will play Jacksonville Christian at noon on Saturday.

Cedar Bluff (3-5), the top seed in the top half of the White bracket, also defeated Jacksonville Christian in pool play on Friday. The final was 15-2 in four innings. The Lady Tigers also held off Gaston 3-2. Cedar Bluff will play an as-yet-determined opponent on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Spring Garden Lady Panthers (3-2) went 1-1 in Friday's pool play. The Lady Panthers fell to Gaston 2-1 in four innings, then rebounded to take a 15-0 decision over Jacksonville Christian in four innings. Spring Garden faces an as-yet-to-be determined opponent on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the White bracket.

Other area teams in the tournament field include Collinsville and Piedmont. Collinsville (8-2) defeated West End 10-1 before falling to Sand Rock 7-1 in pool play on Friday. Collinsville awaits its opponent on Saturday.

Piedmont (6-4) held off Geraldine 9-4 in its only game of the day Friday. The Lady Bulldogs finish pool play on Saturday against Gadsden City at 9 a.m.

Gaylesville also finishes pool play against Fyffe on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Single-elimination action begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and continues throughout the afternoon. The White bracket champion is scheduled to face the Maroon bracket champion on Saturday at 6 p.m.

More game details will be provided at the conclusion of the tournament.
